Only because Charaxa and Alcaeus trust Icechild does Ajal reside under the protection of Clan Lambent.

Ajal is unnerving at best, terrifying more usually. She is followed always by her familiar, whose chain wraps around her neck; he sits usually between her wings, white-eyed and watching.

The hatchlings murmur and gossip that Icechild saved Ajal from one of the Icewarden's tall-walled prisons; the adults scold them when they overhear. After all, the Icewarden is not merciful, and Icechild is so clearly devoted to his God -- surely Icechild has left his homeland in order to serve the Icewarden, not to save another from the Icewarden.

(It is the hatchlings who are right.)
