Yadarvren, Reduced to Whispers

Spiraling Wind
Yadarvren was born a spiral dragon in a most ancient lair in the Reedcleft Ascent. This gave him a disposition suitable for wandering the world. When he was old enough to leave his clan he did so, funding his travels with work as a courier, though the job was mainly a kind of excuse to give him direction.

He might have continued on this way for the entirety of his life, had fate not brought him to the Scarwind Keep, the Seat of the Clan of Singing Blood. He had gained quite a good reputation as a courier, as he was both foolishly daring, and devilishly quick. So he was favored for taking parcels to places which few other dragons were willing to go. The Scarred Wasteland more often employed dragons and beasts of its own nature to serve as messengers and porters.

Curse of Love
Yadarven was bringing to the Keep a selection of rare alchemical ingredients sent to Putridus from one of the pearlchatcher's peers. It was there he first saw her in the choked and smoky chambers leading to the Fumarole Cauldron. She was the terrible and beautiful Mephita, with whom he fell in love instantly.

Yadarven remained with the clan for a little while after that, trying to gain the attention and affections of Mephita. However, Mephita was unyieldingly loyal to her mate, Bhaska. She refused Yadarven's advances, and insulted him, calling him aesthetically inferior in every observable fashion. He was incensed by the insult and determined that he would find a way to have Mephita be his.

Eventually, by way of clever illusions and temporary alchemical transfigurations, he found a way. He disguised himself as Bhaska while the architect was away for a project, and went to her in secret. He had not expected her to sit a nest following his visit, or perhaps had not thought through fully the resultant evidence of his deeds.

Curse of Retribution
Whatever the cause of his mistake, the eggs of her next nest hatched into spiral dragons, and she and her mate were overcome with fury. The children were quickly given to the priests in an attempt to hide them.

Mephita and Bhaska determined to find and punish the dragon who tricked her. It was not hard, as while Yadarvan might have been devilishly quick, he had not known that he needed to flee. Mephita looked at him and thought as she had told him when she'd seen him before; his appearance was shameful. She could not abide having been with such a dragon, so she used her powers and alchemy to mutate him. The results were horrific. The terrible thing she had made of him pleased her sense of aesthetic. Bhaska did not think this was a suitable enough punishment so he cleaved off the creature's wings, and left him in the middle of Clifftown below the Bonestrewn Crest as a show of power and display of Mephita's artistry.

He was taken in by the dragons there, and due to his injuries taken to a healer, who turned out to be the king of the clan he had just infiltrated. Sovri found his plight amusing and healed him, but did not restore his appearance or undo any of the punishment which had been inflicted on him.

Wispering Courier
When Yadarvren tried to speak, he could never manage more than a whisper, and he refused to give his name for fear that Bhaska might discover him and try to kill him. He was horrified by what his body had been reduced to, so he hides under heavy clothes and armor, his face hidden by a mask. Even without wings Whisper is able to fly using powerful wind magic.

Whisper remains with the clan to serve as their courier, fearing an inability to find work or welcome anywhere else, but also because he hopes that one day he might be able to convince someone to restore him, either the King or Mephita herself, somehow. Even if he were restored, he's not sure he would leave, for while he never dares to go near her, he likes being in the same clan as Mephita. The terrible and beautiful creature still having ownership of his foolish and misguided heart.

When not away on business, he hides among the fae of Scarwind Keep. They do not necessarily recognize him as one of their own, but they tolerate his presence.
