A golem made of bone and rock. Leather hangs from sharp armatures protruding from its back in a shape that may once have resembled wings, but has now mostly rotted away. Its joints clack and snap with every movement, but it makes no other sound. It does not breathe. Its eyes are rough stones floating in lidless sockets.

Notes:

Some assumptions to start with:
  • Traditional golems are clay (or some inanimate form/substance) that is brought to "life" with magic. Life is in quotes because artificially produced animation and even some amount of sentience doesn't necessarily indicate the presence of a soul, which I think is integral to the concept of life in dragonkind (and the Beastclans too).
  • The thing known as Vellum is actually two distinct beings.
    • The golem is comprised of the physical body and a minor sentience. It doesn't have feelings/sentiment. It's capable of some free thinking, but isn't exactly a problem-solver and certainly isn't capable of critical thinking and things like philosophy, morality, etc. It can't think past the current moment, so if you ask it to stand under a structure and then knock a support beam out, it would do it because it wouldn't realize that knocking the support out would cause a collapse. It also couldn't tell you why it's wrong to tell someone to do such a thing.
    • Vellum is the more prominent sentience and is an actual soul. This is the driving force behind the golem. The thought processes, decisions, morality, and emotions are all Vellum's. The pearl welded into the golem's chest is Vellum's.
  • The golem's form is comprised of yellow feldspar and bone.
  • The golem's hearing and vision are excellent, but because it doesn't breathe it has no sense of smell. It also can't vocalize.
  • Brynn is an ancient being who at one point or another became obsessed with the idea of immortality (maybe he managed it?) and probably did experiments to test theories. On various subjects other than himself, because he's not going to risk himself until something works, obviously.
  • Harper is an Earth mage, but her girlfriend seems to be nonexistent missing.

Now some half-formed ideas:
  • Idea 1: A Pearlcatcher (Vellum) was part of a procedure to attain immortality which worked (ish).
  • Idea 2: A Pearlcatcher (Vellum) was imprisoned in the golem as punishment.
  • Vellum is freed when the runes are broken. I'm thinking that is a result of an earthquake. Something magical in nature, but not necessarily intended to break those runes. Definitely not Vellum's doing. Harper, maybe? Construction in the area? Earthdad stomping his foot?

And some unanswered bits:
  • (RE: Idea 1) Did Vellum enter into the experiment willingly, or did Brynn abduct her/coerce her? Did Vellum want immortality for herself, or was she under the impression the experiment was meant to do something else? Was Harper involved, or did she learn of it afterwards?
  • (RE: Idea 2) Punishment for what? Punishment against Vellum or against Harper? Both?
  • Was the stolen soul formerly known as Vellum, or did it choose that name to encompass both itself and the golem as an entity?
  • Where exactly is the chamber? I'm thinking it's somewhere in Dragonhome (hence the earthquake idea above), but that may change depending on other details.
  • Who locked Vellum in that ensorcelled chamber? And to what end: why not destroy the evidence rather than preserving it hidden away?
    • Option 1: Brynn locked the golem away to preserve it for future testing/duplication purposes.
    • Option 2: Harper locked it away so nothing happened to it/Brynn couldn't get it while she did research to try to undo the process.
  • How does Vellum communicate? Sign? Telepathy via spell?
  • Additional golems? Could be 1 per flight, all PCs. Definitely at least 1 per flight. List below.
