Biography
A large, smooth sheet of obsidian is embedded into the wall in front of Kara’s research bench. On it, images move as if in real time. A woman breaking into a vault she has no business being near, carrying papers she has no right to carry. Kara knows that woman has been collecting secrets to sell and will soon be dead. Of course, Kara can’t simply kill this traitor herself; she has a reputation amongst her staff to uphold. Everyone knows you can’t hire quality researchers if you scare them off with a little fatality. Kara and her summons have well known signatures in their magic, something she’s been trying to get rid of for quite a while. It’s like a fingerprint, can’t be removed without painful and conspicuous methods.
“Ullwyn’s agent is on the move, expected to reach the target in under an hour,” a deep, whispering voice announces from behind her. Lyr, her primary summons. She doesn’t turn to look, and waves him away. He disappears in a cloud of mist.
It’s late. Or maybe by this point it’s early. There’s still too much to do and sleep is a waste of time. She stands and crosses her stark laboratory, unlocks a cabinet, then a drawer within the cabinet. Inside this drawer is a box that only responds to the signature in her blood. These types of boxes come with one sharp, retractable pin. It opens with a quick pain in her thumb and she removes a single seed. Kara swallows it like medicine and puts the box back.
This is one of the secrets that needs to stay within the Goldstone Institute. Several years ago, Kara and her lead team had attempted to uncover the secret to eternal life, a common topic amongst mages. The idea had been to find and feed directly from the World Tree, from the fruit of the great boughs that connect the spirit and real worlds. They certainly went somewhere, and most definitely found something. Kara returned, the rest of her team did not. The expedition is not spoken about, nor is it recorded anywhere. She had managed to bring back a pouch of seeds. When planted, these seeds sprout into something thinking, feeling, something self aware enough to be worried about it’s own existence. These plants seem to be imbued with a piece of the soul that sowed them. When eaten, weakness fades and energy overflows. Kara has not been ill for decades. She can’t remember how old she is. She can’t remember the faces of her parents, they died so, so long ago.
Kara moves back to her workbench, she won’t need to sleep for at least four days now.
