You can trust him. He's a doctor. Most of the longtime residents of the clan do trust him; he may be superficially creepy, and those who know the most about Pearlcatchers have a lot of questions about his pearl that will never be answered, but he's always been a good doctor. Most accept him as a Plagueling who's fascinated by disease and toxin on an intellectual level but who's choosing to live in Nature for a reason, and who by now surely sees that Nature is the superior place to live. They're about half right. He's intellectually fascinated by disease, death, and decay. He chose to live in Nature because a place so teeming with life is also teeming with death; there are so many opportunities for study here. He's a researcher by temperament, and he's delighted by the recruitment of so many new doctors; less time he needs to spend with patients means more time for the lab. He and the druids have very different opinions about autopsies, and about medical testing performed on animals or dragons, and the main thing keeping those conflicts from explosion has been the lack of a situation that would bring up the questions; the clan has never yet faced an epidemic, or more than a handful of mysterious or "medically interesting" deaths. (He was enthusiastically in favor of transferring to the Light Flight's territory, not because he wanted to shift his allegiance to the Lightbringer - he'd never given it to the Gladekeeper either - but because he thought he'd have a bit more freedom to research out from under the druids' noses. Now he's butting heads with Augustine instead. He's taken to wearing the halo just to get under his skin.) |
