Hook’s Notes:

Lycra is the clan mother, and makes sure everyone is looked after. She's also currently the clan healer, though from how tired she looks all the time, I doubt she'd mind promoting someone else to the position, if she found someone for it. I guess during the very early days of the clan she was also a part of the battle team, though she eventually had to give it up to devote more of her time to caring for the clan. Scarlett says she didn't really like it anyway, and wasn't very good at it either.

Lycra and Histan started the clan soon after Lycra found her charge, an Autumn Dryad named Sansa. Everyone loves Lycra, except in this one area; a pretty good percentage seems to have a permanent beef with Sansa. Since the beginning, Lycra has entrusted Sansa with certain responsibilities, including accounting. She's good with numbers and strategy, so it only made sense. Not everyone thinks she should hold that position though; they don't like that it's not a dragon who makes the important monetary decisions. Sansa is a familiar, they argue, not an actual member of the clan. Who is she to make the calls on where our hard earned treasure goes? However, Lycra trusts her, and Lycra is clan mother. So Sansa keeps her position, and the others continue to grumble quietly, with no result. I actually don't entirely understand their issue; Sansa is not in sole control of the money. Nothing happens without Lycra, Histan and Darcy's mutual consent. She's not even the only one who buys things. Frayda and Simza do most of the shopping. She doesn't control supply; we have various gatherers as well as battle teams, and Boba Fett runs the Exaltation program, handling all of those funds. And Lucifix and Sim are pretty much in charge of selling stuff. But it was bringing in Boba, and convincing the leaders to start an Exalting program, that really brought her public rating down, even though everyone has gotten used to it now and can't argue the fact that it's a tremendous source of income. Dragons were already uneasy with the amount of influence she had in the clan, and that seemed to push things over the edge.

Sansa can actually be very friendly, once you earn her trust, and is pretty funny once you get to know her. She's very thoughtful, and doesn't make decisions rashly, like she's accused of. I probably only know her well enough to see these things because of Scarlett. I get her trust, because I have Scarlett's trust. Sansa is a very defensive person, and takes great offence to the backstabbing she endures everyday. This results in typical pixie misbehavior; pulling pranks and faces and making rude comments and gestures. These cause Lycra no end of grief, and bring criticism her way as well, which only makes Sansa even more defensive and passive aggressive. It's a vicious cycle. Sansa's defense is acting like no one can hurt her, and like she doesn't give a sugar what others think or say. But I think deep down, it hurts her. And I also think that, deep down, she does care about this clan, and does consider herself a part of it, no matter what the dragons say. Otherwise, why would she stay through all of this? I don't think even Lycra would be reason enough to stay, if she didn't care. There are, after all, a handful of dragons she is close with. This is her family, whether they all want her here, or not.

____That first one ended up being more about Sansa; this one is about Lycra, promise. This is her love story.

____I’ve heard it told that being a Leader can be lonely. Everybody respects and reveres you, but so few are close enough to really love you. I think that must have been what triggered Lycra’s spot of depression. Scarlett doesn’t know much about this part of the story, since it was before she was born, but I’ve been able to get a few things out of Costiel. Histan and Lycra started the clan in the traditional way; by having a nest together. Every clan needs a first nest, and Costiel is one out of the three children resulting from that union, and the only one that stayed. Histan and Lycra never hit it off though; they remained close friends and partners, but never pursued a relationship beyond that. They raised Costiel together as best as they could without actually being together, and that’s probably part of why he’s a little screwed up. He also told me that it was rough for him when his mother and Feanor broke up; I guess they had a thing for awhile, but they never had a nest. Feanor stepped into a fatherly role for Costiel, but he tells me the reason it didn’t work out between him and Lycra is that Lycra was too free spirited for Feanor and his love of rules and order, and also that she got frustrated with how it sometimes seemed he would rather be staring at stars than spending time with her. When he left, he left Costiel as well, and pretty much immediately started up a relationship with Simza, who was much younger, and that started up all kinds of controversy and whispers. He must have a thing for drama, because that relationship didn’t work out either, and Sim’s moved on and who knows who he’ll end up with next. Maybe he should stick to stars.

____Anyway. It was shortly after this and the clan’s move from the Spine to the Starwood that Lycra lapsed into depression. Cos says she’d go missing for half the day, and someone would finally find her drifting over the sea, back near the Spine. Or else she’d be found sleeping in her cave, because she’d been flying all night. Costiel didn’t know how to reach her, and Histan and Darcy were always gone training. Garett and Iosel stepped in during this time to try to take some of the weight off of Lycra’s shoulders, and give her a bit of a break.

____And then, one morning she came back with a dragon.

____He was a big Guardian who matched her in color, had Water eyes, was tangled in nets and sea debris, and was unconscious. He was badly wounded and took all of Lycra’s attention for two weeks; he nearly didn’t make it. When he finally turned the corner and woke up, he told how he’d been caught in a sea funnel while out fishing, and had been carried out much farther than his strength could carry him back in, which is how he washed up on our shore instead of back on his own. His name was Lliant (and that’s said “Shiant” with a very soft, nearly unintelligible “sh,” for language reasons I don’t understand), and he and Lycra fell for each other pretty much immediately. Costiel was not pleased about some stranger from the sea enchanting his mother so quickly, or perhaps he still wanted Feanor back, but anyway he seems to like him better now, and they are very happy together, and seem to balance each other out perfectly. Lycra is strong willed and Lliant even keeled. She’s concerned with everything all at once and wants everyone to be happy all the time, and he’s content to take things one at a time and is not afraid of anyone being upset with him, so long as they both know the whole truth of where the other stands. When she gets ahead of herself, he slows her down. And when he needs to stop considering a thing and actually do it, she’s the one who can get him there. His even temper and uncanny ability to pull things out of you, makes him a great clan mediator. It’s not an official title, because he claims he has not completely mastered the art of being non partisan, though I’m not sure that’s even entirely possible anyway. They both share a great love for truth and justice, which is I suppose what sometimes gets in his way when acting as mediator, since he’s not supposed to take either side.

____When I asked Lycra for her version of the story, she was very clear on the fact that Lliant did not actually take away her depression. He helped her feel found and noticed, but in the end she had to find a way to believe in herself again, and to believe that everyone around her really did care about her as much as they seemed to. “Depression makes everything into a monster,” she told me. “You start seeing things that aren’t there, and misinterpreting the things that are. No one can heal your mind for you. They can help you see things in another light, they can point you in the right direction, they can hold you when you’re falling, but they can’t heal your mind for you. That’s a long process that should involve a lot more input than just one other’s, and it certainly isn’t something you can do by yourself.” She also told me that she still falls back on that broken mindset from time to time, but by being honest with those close to her, is able to be lifted back out before she can fall too far.

____”It’s a love issue,” she said. “If you can be confident that you are loved and always will be, fear disappears, and joy replaces it, and your ability to love increases ten fold.”

____Lycra and Lliant have had several nests together, and Scarlett is from their third.
