Josiah had been very close with his brother, Geras, and still mourns him months after his departure. No matter how many times his companions explain exaltation to him, he remains convinced that Geras had been killed and that nobody has the heart to tell him so
Finally, he emerged from his grief with a powerful new determination to prevent any other dragons from dying. Donning the apparel more suited to a mortician, he declared that he would be a doctor like his father, and vowed to find a way to cure death itself. Siefr was unbearably proud, but Lyseria was deeply alarmed by Josiah's proclamation, even more so when he turned down her offer of tutelage in the medical arts and insisted that he would find his own way
