totally shameless self-insert. horrifying necromancer, really gross. always wearing that eye cover and trailing around at the rear of the pack during the race. after the slowest runners but before the hordes of mirrors and vultures that set upon the corpses of dropouts, carl picks up the parts of fallen runners to tinker with, trying to meld them into something new, or combine them with natural materials. carl is the one who fashioned diego into the weeping monstrosity of flesh, oil and feldspar he is today.

no dragon participating in the race knows what his face looks like beneath that cover, though a stray hatchling once told mitt she saw him sneaking about sleeping racers with his cover removed- his face obfuscated by horrifyingly bright, spinning wheels of eyes scanning his surroundings, and two long, additional arms outstretched from beneath his wings. mitt and anyone else would tell you that's nothing more than a child's nightmare, but who can say for sure?
