Biography

Angel - Observer - Bookwyrm

"Each of these living beings had six wings, and their wings were covered all over with eyes, inside and out. Day after day and night after night they keep on saying, 'Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God, the Almighty--the one who always was, who is, and who is still to come.'"―Revelation 4:8

Throne is not what most people think of when they think of an angel. For one, they spend most of their time with the House's resident demon. For another, they have far, far too many eyes for most people's comfort. However, Throne still possesses many of the traditional hallmarks of angeldom. They are a genderless being of pure divine magic, they spend a lot of time watching other people while invisible, they've got a lovely singing voice, and they...

Look they have like a lot of eyes, man. I don't know what to tell you. It's unsettling.

As an angel, Throne's primary purpose is bringing glory to their god. When questioned on which god exactly Throne serves, they tend to deflect the question with a vague, "Oh, you know. The good one." They do quote a lot of scripture about the deity, though even dragons with theological training find the verses maddeningly both familiar and impossible to place. Throne is very much a "speaking in tongues of fire" style preacher, with their songs and words of praise having a blistering magical edge that makes them almost unbearable for mortal ears.

Throne finds mortals fascinating, though not very relatable. They particularly struggle with the concept of "privacy." It confuses them that when they were in the heavens, mortals were constantly praying for angels to watch over their lives, yet now that Throne is on the mortal plane, suddenly deciding to watch someone sleep is "creepy." Their favorite pastime is people watching, followed shortly by reading. As a being capable of speaking pure Light and Fire and Truth, they find the stumbling imperfection of mortal languages fascinating.

Their obsession with books and immunity from most magical effects made them a perfect candidate for House librarian. Many of the books in the House library are ancient, cursed, or otherwise dangerous, and Throne helps to make sure residents don't check out books that are likely to burn the eyes out of their head. The only drawback of appointing an angel as librarian is that the penalties for losing or damaging books are strict and usually delivered via flaming sword.

Throne was originally summoned to this plane by the demon Risk, who was hoping the angel would fall in love with her and help her live out her cliche romance novel fantasies. And that's exactly what happened. Though Throne has chosen to disregard mortal gender concepts that would traditionally cast them as Risk's "boyfriend" or "girlfriend," they have nevertheless enthusiastically accepted their role as romantic costar in the demon's strange pantomime of a mortal relationship. While it might seem strange that an angel of the Lord would love a demon like Risk, they actually have quite a bit in common. Risk is also a reader (though mostly of romances), and both love to gossip about the mortals they spy on watch over. Throne does not begrudge Risk's wicked ways, and in fact finds it admirable that she follows the path her dark Lord set out for her, just as Throne follows the path of Light set out for them.

Still, their interactions can seem awkward by mortal standards, like some kind of strange long-term role play of a relationship instead of the real thing. They frequently act out what they perceive as normal mortal relationship milestones. It's not unusual to hear Throne proclaiming, with the gravity of a Shakespearean actor, something like "Risk, I am afraid to admit that I have forgotten our Anniversary, and therefor have not brought the required tribute of flowers and chocolate nourishment. I will now remind you that I find your physical appearance pleasing in a foolish attempt to forestall your beautiful wrath." No one has ever seen the couple have an actual non-scripted fight before, which is fortunate. It's unlikely that the House would survive the carnage if they ever truly broke up.

Throne pays little attention to most of the House hatchlings outside of making sure they don't damage library property. Yet they are extremely fond of the hatchlings produced by themself and Risk (through means few members of the House are brave enough to ask about.) Most of their offspring are born mortal, but Throne nevertheless takes the time to teach them all about the structure of the heavens and the realms beyond. They particularly like to read to their hatchlings, though it's been observed by other Housemates that Throne is not very good at separating fact from fiction when educating their young. This gives the dragonets a distorted worldview that can make it difficult for them to interact with others. Throne finds any concerns about this funny, usually responding with, "You think anything you know is the truth? That is adorable."

The LORD is always watching.
