Biography
■
damhan the stag paladin |
There will never be enough time for Damhan to repent of his sins. Not even the Lightweaver herself could absolve him, though he would certainly thank her for trying. It would be a kind gesture, even if fruitless at the very same time, and he would not intentionally offend the deity he has pledged the rest of his life to.
Of course, could his existence be an affront to the Mother? The question always remains, because Damhan has known the answer before. Rejection is an intimately familiar sensation, one he grapples with every day when he rises, every evening before he rests. Rejection of his Search, rejection of his birthright.
Worst of all, though, rejection by his people. His family.
He will be sorry for the rest of his days, and that will never remedy the damage done.
The impulses of a young prince, no matter how noble, are often dangerous. Not a day goes by without Damhan wishing he had mastered the simple art of patience. It had been his father's one request, befitting so many situations, but of such critical importance. If he had learned patience, he would still be a prince. More importantly, his sisters would not have suffered as a result of his actions. His loyal knights would not have surrendered their very lives. His people would not have lost their faith in him.
He should have waited for Queen Maeve to dispel the enchantment that imprisoned his sisters in that Shade-infested pit. She had dedicated most of her life to magical mastery, for twice as many years and then some more than Damhan had even been alive, let alone devoting to his own martial arts. If he was a formidable force with a blade, she was a tempest unleashed with magic.
She could have freed Isibeal and Bronagh without hurting them, without killing ten knights in the process. But Damhan had not known patience. There was only fear for his sisters and the brute force that made him a soldier prince.
Now, as far as he knows, one sister has lost both of her front paws, and the accompanying functions. The other has lost her mind, never lucid for more than a moment, but hysterical nearly all the time. He has not seen them since his banishment, when his father stripped him of his crown before the entire court, and truth be told, he probably will not see them again.
He does not deserve to. Not when it is his fault that they have suffered so much. His fault that the sect of Shadetouched warlocks was able to spirit them away in the first place. There is a great deal that he should have done differently, and now, there are no chances left.
Damhan asks the Lightweaver to grace his family each night before he lies down to sleep. He does not ask for an answer to his Search, which tugs at his heart so furiously these days, nor does he beg for forgiveness, nor his crown, nor one last visit to the lands that he once called home. He is a paladin in her service because he does not deserve these things, because he ought to spend the rest of his life protecting others rather than failing them.
But his family has always deserved a better son.
