Tears threatened to spill from Juniper’s swimming vision as she watched Zenith go. What if he got hurt? she wondered instinctively. The Beastclans were a dangerous force- sure, their weapons may be primeval, but a rock shard the size of your fist to the head wasn’t the greatest for your health.

“Hey! Before you go, make sure you have enough ice packs!” she called.

Juniper might’ve imagined it, but she swore that Zenith shook his head.
The Pearlcatcher didn’t have time to worry about it now- because dragon clans were ransacking sacred Beastclan land in the north, many dragons from lairs across Sornieth were being dispatched to combat the rioting Beastclans.
And she needed to see them all off.

She remembered her first few days as a field nurse as vividly as if they were hours before. Juniper spent the entire afternoon running around, packing first aid kits, offering mega-packs of instant-ice packs to departing warriors, and most of all, steeling herself for the field hospital. The first shift of nurses had all come back dead, gruesome infected wounds marring their once-pure faces. The doctors at the battlefront were yet to find a cure for the Beastclan’s simple yet effective ordnance.

By the time the second shift of field nurses were all ready, Juniper’s talons were trembling so badly that she could barely fold her bedroll neatly into her backpack.

As she lifted off along with her fellow comrades, she worried how the wounded coming into the headquarters she was just leaving would cope without any doctors or nurses available. Hopefully they know some rest and a good instant ice pack goes a long way, Juniper thought wistfully, turning her face towards the blowing wind and snow-topped mountains.

Juniper immediately changed her mind about being a field nurse the moment they brought out the first victim. His mangled, disoriented wing lay twisted across his stomach, gushing blood like some kind of gory fountain.

Her commander, a burly Guardian with a mauled eye, grabbed her by the shoulders as she twisted to run.

“No. You will stay and perform operations on this poor soul. Unless you would like to fight for him…?”

Juniper frantically shook her head, still trembling from the sight of pearly-white bone protruding through the thin, torn membrane of the injured soldier’s wing. “No, sir.”
Setting to work, Juniper dampened a musty cloth and scrubbed the blood, dirt, and grime from the dragon’s wounds. She had her doubts, though. The more she cleaned, the worse the infected tear in the soldier’s scales looked. Stepping back, she slammed down the cloth and tried to walk away again.

This is all too much, Juniper muttered to herself. All too much.

“HEY! NURSE! WE NEED A NURSE!” screamed a hoarse voice.

Juniper, compelled by her instinctive urge to help, tore through neatly-pitched tents, breaking through huddles of troops sharing stories about the battlefield. The Pearlcatcher took one look at the next wounded victim and nearly lost her meager lunch.
The victim lay in a slowly growing pool of blood, his chest heaving with each breath. Juniper soon found the cause- a stone, about the size of her fist, was embedded in the Fae’s ribcage, serrated around the edges.

“What do we do?” asked a young soldier, his brow wrinkling in concern.

“We have to remove the stone- but I’ll need help.” Juniper replied, a growing panic slowly creeping up her throat. What if she did this wrong, and ended up killing the Fae?

He probably has no chance of survival, nagged a puny voice in the back of her mind. I shouldn’t think like that, she scolded herself. He has a chance, and I will be the one to make that true.
Bracing herself, she grasped the rocks with both shaking talons, while the Fae put his on the other side.

“Ready… pull!”

With a great heave, the stone flew through the air, flipping head over heels, and landed neatly in the wastebasket with a satisfying clunk.

The Fae on the table gave a great sigh, the blood flow gradually depleting.

After she finished dressing the wound, Juniper gave a little bow and left, feeling better about her profession than she had when she first arrived.

She spent the next week bustling around camp, tending to the wounded and sick, reassuring their comrades that the victims would be fine. It hurt the Pearlcatcher to see so many injured, shafts of arrows protruding out of various body parts, marrs and scratches pockmarking those who had fought the vicious Beastclans.

Juniper was called in to tend to some of the most wounded dragons- ones that didn’t even remember who they were, why they were here, or what their name was.

But Juniper could always solve it- injuries, maladies, nothing could stop her.
