Shemlen was the second dragon in the Summer Coterie, and he's widely regarded as the leader, although he makes it clear that he defers to Amaranth. He is, in a word, fierce. He is wise and intelligent and quite the scholar, reading over every scroll and tome presented to him (and also the ones that are hidden from him). He is insistent and traditional, but quite patient with everyone in his clan, especially the younglings. He cares for all of his children, but does tend to play favorites based on who is the most interested in the things he himself is interested in (as parents seem to do).

"I do wonder, have you, Order, or any of your Lightning kin, attempted the literal catching of a storm?"

"I myself do not advocate torture within my clan, but so long as my clan goes unaffected by your interrogations I care little."

"I demand rum. Where is the rum."

"My clan too also keeps much to itself, interacting with choice few. I speak on behalf of my clan when I say we are thankful to be considered amongst those you favor."
