The Doctor’s condition is unique. She is an involuntary shape-shifter, with a total of thirteen known incarnations.

This process, known as ‘regeneration’, is not something she can control: it could strike at any time, changing her both in body and in mind. However, for all that she cannot predict or prevent her regenerations, the Doctor has never transformed in front of the rest of the Clan. The Doctor claims that the ability to regenerate is a by-product of her status as a ‘Time Lord’, but it remains unclear whether this is true – or whether she should be able to control it.

Each incarnation of the Doctor is different in both appearance and personality, though all thirteen of them share a common protective streak and adventurous nature. Each of the Doctors also has their own favoured companions who accompany them when they leave the Blue Plinth. With each regeneration, any of the incarnations may appear, apparently at random; the Clan has numbered them according to the order in which they met each version of the Doctor, in order to have a way to refer to the individual incarnations.
