Legends say that most of the realm's amber was formed in an ancient battle between the Flamecaller and the Gladekeeper, where terrible forest fires polymerized resin within the trees in the Viridian Labyrinth.

Hundreds of years later, Fiera is one of the many Fire-born jewellers specialising in crafting amber making their living in the Viridian Labyrinth.

Vert-divider-200.png The best amber deposits are guarded fiercely by the eponymous species of Gulper, an armoured fish large enough to swallow all but the largest breeds of dragons whole. These creatures live within the richly contested waters of the region known as the 'Crystal Pools', where all kinds of gemstone and crystal deposits now rise above the once-tranquil waters, driving treasure seekers to seek their fortunes within, and it's inhabitants to become yet more aggressive in defending their prized hoards.

As a young, skilled, craft-dragon, Fiera was confident in both her ability to snatch a chunk of high quality amber for her next project, and the fact of her size being enough to minimise any attacks from angry Gulpers. Anticipating a few days of discreet searching and perhaps a couple of minor tussles, she packed lightly, including a few packs of dried jerky to distract or bribe an Amber Gulper away from their den.

m0OFs9M.gif Arriving at the Crystal Pools, it didn't take long for Fiera to spot flashes of the orange armoured back of a large Amber Gulper in the waters adjacent to a large spire of yellow crystal. Carefully alighting on the top of the spire without casting a shadow over the Gulper's path below, she traced it's patrol route, looking for any signs of what it was guarding.

As day faded into night, Fiera was concerned that she'd lose sight of the Gulper in the currents below, but as the sun descended below the horizon, the ambient glow of the countless crystals intensified, until the whole region was lit almost as brightly as in the sunlight. With the glow of the crystals beneath the water, if anything the movements of the Gulper became easier to follow!

Under the now green-tinged light, the Gulper's regular return to an indent in the sea-bed just below the crystal's base became obvious. With the likely location of her prize determined, Fiera settled down to sleep, resolving to wake with the first rays of sun and explore the Gulper's den as soon as it reached the furthest point in the patrol route of it's territory.

Vert-divider-400.png Blinking into alertness as the sun crested the horizon, Fiera stashed the majority of her supplies in a crack in the crystal, away from roving harpies and hippalectryon, and stocked her most waterproof satchel with a bundle of jerky and a hammer and chisel, in case the amber needed to be dislodged from it's setting.

Not catching a single glimpse of the Gulper as she scanned the waters below, Fiera dived straight towards the sea-bed, avoiding the crayfish who snapped their claws in her direction as she passed the holes in the crystal they hid in. Soon, she reached her target, and with no sign of it's guardian, peered inside.

To her dismay, only the skeletal remains of smaller fish and the crystallised remnants of a satchel sat sadly on the bottom of the Gulper's den. Wriggling her head further inside, Fiera squinted at the walls and ceiling in vain hope of catching a glint of orange.

Suddenly, she felt a sharp pain in her hind leg! Wriggling back out of the den as fast as she could, she flailed around in the water as she felt several more bites to her tail and wings. Finally freeing her head, she looked up just to see an enraged Almandine Sturgeon headed straight for her, and as she dived to escape it, spotted multiple Amber Gulpers right behind her!

qb4KjQH.gif Twisting and turning through the water, Fiera futilely attempted to distract some of the fish way from her by tossing the jerky out towards open waters, but it was gulped up in an instant by a Sturgeon who barely diverted it's course to reach it! Harried through mazes of crystal spines and outcroppings, Fiera's snapping teeth and lashing claws seemed to slide off the Gulper's and Sturgeon's scales without a scratch.

After hours of frenetic swimming, the sunlight from above began to dim once more. With only scattered opportunities to catch her breath, Fiera was exhausted, and the angry fish were somehow still going after her! Frustrated past breaking point, and herded into a corner between columns of rock, she opened her mouth as wide as it could go and lunged straight for the Gulper at the head of the shoal.

Seizing it's head in her mouth, teeth locked behind the ridge of sharp scales behind it's pectoral fins, Fiera shook her head violently, wings flaring to push the other fish away. Finally releasing the Gulper from her grip, she let out a soundless roar at the stunned fish still gathered in front of her. To her astonishment, the fish began to drift away, the stunned Gulper she had grabbed vanishing with a flick of it's tail.

Vert-divider-200.png Cautiously swimming out of the cove, Fiera's eyes caught on a glint of orange on the side of the underwater cliff, illuminated by the softly glowing crystals embedded around it. Hardly daring to believe her eyes, she carefully pried the smooth chunk of pristine amber from the rock with her claws, having lost her tools at some point in the chase.

Cradling her prize to her chest, Fiera barely stopped long enough to pick up her stashed supplies before flying straight towards home, now much more understanding of why so many craft-dragons preferred to buy their amber from traders than source it themselves!
