After Nuclear war had destroyed the earth covering it in radiation many fleed to a space station named "The Ark". 97 years later Clarke was part of the 100 juvienile deliquents to be sent to the ground to see if earth was now survivable. On their jounrney they find that they are not alone. The "grounders" over time were able to filter small traces of radiation through thier blood which is why they were able to survive on the ground.

Clarke ended up meeting the new commander of the gounders "Lexa". Although this pair faced troubles and let eachother down. They fell in love despite Lexa claiming "Love is weakness".

The two woman formed an aliance and brought their clans together. Skaikru was to become the 13th clan of the coalition. Upon Lexas death Clarke learned the lore surrounding The Commanders and how they were picked to rule. A true commander was born with black blood (Nightblood), which they descended from Ali as she tried to find a way for people to survive earth after the war. Natblidas were able to withstand highrr radiation with less ill effects.

Clarke finds out that a second coming of radiation known as priamfiya is going to yet again plague the earth and kill all those who didnt find a way to get off the ground. She and her mother tried to make synthetic nightblood, and test it against radiation. All their test subjects died and clarke injected herself to have Nightblood. Only to discover it wouldnt be strong enough to withstand the level of radiation that was coming.

Octavia found an underground bunker that could hold 1200 peope in it and fought in a conclave representing Skaikru, a leader from each clan also had to fight. The winner of the conclave got the bunker for their clan.
Octavia refused to fight just for skaikru and said if she won it would be shared.

Sheidheda would have her believe that love was weakness, the way he made Lexa believe it, and yes, it can be — love can control us however we let it. It can make us weak. But Clarke chose in this episode to make love her strength, and so that is what it became.
