Walking over to them, Sammy sat down next to Rourke, shoulders bumping as he settled against the wall. Rourke didn’t even react, just turned to look at Sammy so they could keep talking.

Sammy reached out, running a hand down the length of the kitten’s back, loving how soft her fur felt against his uninjured palm. “I know what I want to name her.”

“Oh,” Rourke asked, clearly interested. Rourke may have been trying to act tough, but Sammy could already see a softer side to him that shown a little brighter in quiet moments like that. “What’s that?”

“Luna.”

“Lu-na.” Rourke struggled to say the word, and Sammy repeated it again, the two of them mimicking one another until Rourke managed to say the name correctly. “What’s it mean,” he asked once he had seemingly mastered the word.

“It means ‘moon.’ I know you said you don’t know what the moon is, but it’s a light in the darkness. The moon is this huge thing that lights up the night sky so you can see where you are going.”
