Riftmaker is not the name the sorceress was born with. Her birth name was that of a merchant family in a large city just on the edge of the Snowsquall Tundra, and their name meant wealth and influence. From the age of a young dragon, Riftmaker was taught all she needed to know to take over her parent’s business one day, as a lady and trader worthy of the heritage. Riftmaker never struggled with the burden, instead carried it with pride. When her parents discovered that their oldest daughter was also able to use magic, sorcery was added to Riftmaker’s schedule. She studied with diligence and determination, and soon was allowed to learn from famous magicians and scholars. They were impressed by the young dragon’s abilities and offered her a place in one of the great magical academies on Sornieth. Some even rumored that one day, Riftmaker would take the place of head sorceress in said academy, a position of power comparable to a queen.

But such rumors create envy, and envy creates wrath. In the middle of a foggy night, the begrudgers set fire to Riftmaker’s family home. The family was taken by surprise, most of the members not even waking from their sleep. Within just minutes, all that Riftmaker valued and treasured was consumed by the flames. Riftmaker herself was also caught in the flames, and life was escaping her grasp.


The arsonist were still in viewing range of the scene of their crime, when suddenly, the building exploded in a burst of flames. Rising from it did a winged figure, flames licking from their feathers, shadows and smoke dancing around the silhouette. A phoenix from the ashes, her magic allowing her to cling to life, Riftmaker bore down upon them. They stood no chance.

Riftmaker left the city and her name in the very same night. For a long while, she travelled aimlessly, her former determination lost. It took her half a year to find herself again and to muster the strength to wear her chin up with pride. She called herself Riftmaker, and returned to sorcery… just this time as a traveling sorceress, unbound by the laws of academies and magician councils. Those that come across her get to know her as a lady, but they quickly learn that they should not be careless around her. Riftmaker does not reveal much of herself, of her ideals and plans, maybe because sometimes she herself is not even sure of them. She will change sides quickly if it benefits her, and not think twice if offered a lucrative chance. She can be a powerful ally, but be warned: Do not get in her way.
