"I didn't care about them.
All the dragons I'd birthed were simply intended for exaltation. I needed the gold to get by. What work could I possibly be good for? Nocturnes are looked down upon here.
If only I could get my claws on a scroll to take that discrimination away-- maybe I could be a Guardian. Everybody loves Guardians; those thick-scaled brutes that shimmer like the ocean waves themselves. What I wouldn't give to be one, and to forget about my past of living off the blood money from throwing away my children.
Maybe I'll care about something someday, if I can just leave my old self and all of her struggles behind."
