Masquerade

shape-shifter of Shadow and Light when the world was still young. Some saw her as a trickster as she used her magic masks to become other shapes and beings, but all she had really had been doing was searching for that one form, that one place, where she might belong. Her life was of sad longing while looking at the world through her masks as she always felt like she was on the outside looking in. No matter how much she tried to be like them and fit in to be included, it always seemed to go the same way; they only seemed to tolerate or remember her when they wanted or needed something from her, and then they forgot about her any other time. To them she was just a resource to be used and thrown away. They never really cared or wanted her around, but so long as she proverbially danced to the tune they wanted to hear, she could at least pretend that they cared about her for a little while.


straight out of the cosmos itself. He seemed to actually enjoy her company, without asking anything of her. For anything she did give to him, he reciprocated in kind and enjoyed the warm feelings it gave them both. He, too, had trouble fitting in, since he was rare and so different from all the other dragons. His name was Resonance.

kind of things she liked, and then he delighted in giving them to her - if only to see her smile. As he grew to love who she was on the inside, he developed the unique ability to see through her masks, which confounded Masquerade. No one had ever done that before, and no one had ever even tried. Most people liked the face they wanted to see and never looked deeper. How was it that he could see who and what she really was, and yet he still came to love her just the same when no one else ever had? She had never imagined that would even be possible.


and sweet gestures that he was sincerely interested in her. He patiently stayed by her side and over time they fell in love. Eventually, she decided who it was she wanted to be, and not just who everyone wanted her to be. Awed and inspired by his example, Masquerade fashioned a mask to become an Imperial Dragon so that she could spend her life with Resonance being loved and enjoying being herself. They had finally found where they belonged; together. Now, the two spend their long days together in the happy bliss that they had always hoped to find.
