Biography

Latvanna

Fable wrote:
A Fox and a Leopard, resting lazily after a generous dinner, amused themselves by disputing about their good looks. The Leopard was very proud of his glossy, spotted coat and made disdainful remarks about the Fox, whose appearance he declared was quite ordinary.

The Fox prided herself on her fine bushy tail with its tip of white, but she was wise enough to see that she could not rival the Leopard in looks. Still she kept up a flow of sarcastic talk, just to exercise her wits and to have the fun of disputing. The Leopard was about to lose his temper when the Fox got up, yawning lazily.

"You may have a very smart coat," she said, "but you would be a great deal better off if you had a little more smartness inside your head and less on your ribs, the way I am. That's what I call real beauty."

It is said that there is no point in trying to trick a trickster, for they will be able to predict your every move. Despite this, there is a neverending game of wits that plays out deep within the lands of the Tangled Wood. While underhanded tactics can be employed in order to win a game, even this is never enough to outsmart the smartest, nor outfox the foxiest, of the Shadowbinder's children. Whether games of cards, a challenge of riddles, perhaps dice, or any other game of chance or intellect, should you challenge a dragon of the Shadows, there is no doubt that they will accept with glee and do everything within their power to be victorious. This includes, of course, the daily challenges - finding food and water, gathering trinkets and baubles, tending to their clans and dens and children. No task too great or small will be overlooked for an opportunity for a moment of sport or getting the better of their neighbor.

Tales immemorable speak of one dragon so wily and cunning that her true name had never been spoken, lest someone use it against her; those that did come to know her only realized who she was after their destined meeting (though many would argue she never met anyone she did not plan to meet, and to whatever ends those might be would be anyone's guess). For her guile and for the silvery sheen of both scale and tongue, many came to know her simply as "The Silver Princess". Rumors told by befuddled travelers sometimes spoke of bewitching laughter, while others adamantly bellowed of a glint of silver within the glow cast by the phosphorescent spores; still others -- a very rare few -- would claim that they had been wiled out of their treasures, but not a single dragon that passed through the Wispwillow Grove nor the Foxfire bramble had ever once bested the Silver Princess. Or at least that is what the rumors will tell you.

It was some time in the past when dragons were only beginning to truly thrive upon Sornieth. A young dragoness, much like any other, was born into a mire-shrouded nest of four. Of her siblings she was the brightest. The others were fine, dark dragons with hides and wings in dark hues that blended perfectly with the shadows in which they lived. No sooner than they were fully fledged were they taken to the Shadowbinder and presented for Exalting -- their names forgotten and erased from the anals of history as the Shadowbinder's darkness obscures all things. This left only her with her bright scales and her silvery wit.

The loss of her siblings changed her. No matter how often she was told that their absence was a great honor, she felt cheated. If it was an honor, then why did she not get to go? Why was she alone left without a purpose to deal with the dull dragons that passed through their lands? In time, her bitter heart caused a rift between herself and her parents and she found herself without a home, without a clan, and without a family -- she was left to her own devices and whatever ending fate had in store for her.

In the following years she lied, cheated, stole, tricked, cajoled, convinced, begged, borrowed and more. She tried anything and everything to obtain sustenance, water, shelter and even companionship. Along the way, she even bore children of her own blood while staying temporarily with a clan that was not her own. The tryst was delightful and thrilling, filled with passion and pranks and romantic puzzles and riddles, but as with most fires that blaze brightly, it quickly burned out.

For the second time, she watched those she cared for stroll into the Forum to be welcomed by the Shadowbinder and absorbed by a darkness so deep that even her Shadow eyes of purple could no longer follow them.

Alone once again, she struggled for a purpose. Solitude and bitterness stole through her mind and her heart and she embraced the madness, gleefully embracing the unpredictable and disconcerting eccentricities that its state brought out from within her. Then, in time, she was forgotten. No one knew her -- she was a faded memory, a brief recognition that never fully surfaced, a kindling of a notion carried away by a firmer thought, a dream out of reach upon waking. In this, she found freedom; no longer bound by expectation or ken, she gave herself over to the playful darkness and wrapped herself in the guise of intellect given ephemeral form.

Making a point to conceal herself from the other denizens of the Shadowbinder's territory, she would reveal herself only to travelers. She would pose riddles to them, or puzzles, or challenge them to games, and always with the same rules - the loser gives up the thing most valuable to them. In this way she came into possession of a great many things. Trinkets and materials, treasures and gemstones, keepsakes and lucky tokens, even an odd egg or two (to the great shame of the thief or parent) -- all of these became hers to hoard over and she guarded each one quite jealously as the game grew and her delight was compounded by the rumors and frustrations of those that passed through her territory. Some sought her, some dreaded her, but always the result was the same:

"Better luck next time."

Then came a time when fewer travelers came through her section of the land. Now and then a young dragon would be dared to enter her territory, but the thrills of pranking them or taking their measly trinkets in lackluster exchanges of wits and luck grew painfully boring. With time, even those interactions dwindled as she blended into the darkness. Her mind and spirit yearned to be challanged and tested, begged for the distractions that kept her from dwelling on the past and the ache of her memories, until at last she could take no more. She could not wallow and wait within the darkness any longer.

Gingerly, she ventured into the brightness of the world.
