Within Noctiluca is an unassuming river. It does not flow through all of the hewn city, seeming to rise from the very ground. An entrance to the Abyss, requiring guarding and maintenance. For this purpose, the river itself has chosen none other than Oasis. The day he arrived in the lair, his pearl petrified, becoming a disconnected portion of the riverbed. No longer was the pearl maintainable, on occasion not even feeling like his own. Slowly, his body seemed to partially petrify, scales becoming tough and rocky, movements slowing and becoming rough.

Oasis has been the chosen guard ever since, responsible for protecting the river and maintaining it's passage through the lair. Another pearlcatcher joined him in guarding the river, a former coliseum fighter named Cain, who lacked a pearl of his own. The two got along well, finding warmth and companionship with one another that they hadn't found with members of their species previously.

On one trip by the river, Oasis found Cain, soaked, clutching an orb of obsidian, and seemingly having been dragged out of the river. The other dragon was barely conscious, and hardly spoke, clearly rattled. He pulled the other guard into his own lair, covering him in furs and starting a fire to keep him warm. Oasis didn't ask even for a moment what had happened, only dedicating his time for the next few days to helping Cain recover. The river raged outside, but Oasis' mind and heart were elsewhere.

When Cain and his orb burst into flames, Oasis was the first to help him adjust. He grew thankful for his semi-petrified body, and it's near-immunity to burns. While he recovered from his burns, Cain told him everything. But none of that mattered to Oasis, as long as he was safe and still himself.
