Kyokia grew up in a small town as a scavenger with her sister Melody. They taught themselves some basic fighting skills to deal with the other young, abandoned dragons who attempted to steal their small slabs of meat and their clear, fresh water from the melted sludge near the Frigid Floes. She, Melody, and two other hatchlings named Faira and Lexi often stayed awake past midnight, looking up at the unforgiving Fortress of Ends, dreaming about it. But their dreams about the Fortress were not the same.
Melody, Faira, and Lexi wanted to serve the Icewarden. They fought and Kyokia took care of them. One morning, Kyokia woke up, and she realized the truth.
They were gone.

Once Kyokia realized her fellow dragons were gone, she didn't bother searching. She knew that they had left to embark on the perilous journey to the Fortress of Ends, and she didn't see why she had to stop them. It was their dream, after all. Luckily for her, two small, malnourished faes flopped right on top of a hill nearby, and Kyokia sprinted towards them. Their wings were a faint purple that had once been sharp and beautiful, their eyes seemed dull, and they looked as tired as possible. Kyokia attempted to feed the one with dried blood a small piece of meat she spotted lying nearby, but the fae merely shook her head. Frantic, Kyokia searched for something else. She grabbed a few glass isopods crawling nearby, and the fae swallowed them easily. Now, the other one. This one had a few dried blood stains on her hand, but overall she seemed to be in better condition than the first one Kyokia had just fed. Scanning the nearby snow-covered land, Kyokia brought the faes back to the temporary hut she lived in and went on the hunt for more isopods.

Soon, both faes were fed and fully awake, the first one scratching dried blood off of her wings. She noticed Kyokia staring at her.
"Who are you, where am I, and what am I doing here? Where's Aiko?" she demanded.
Kyokia immediately assumed the other fae was Aiko, and lifted a small claw to point towards the corner of the hut.
"Okay. So one's down. Now, who are you, where am I, and how did I get here? TELL ME OR I WILL PUNCH YOUR FACE IN!"
Kyokia shivered at the thought. "I'm Kyokia. You fell from the sky and tumbled onto a hill. I saw you when I walked out of my hut, which we're in right now, and I went to go save you and your friend. You're in the Southern Icefields, I'm not quite sure where. That over there," she pointed to the Fortress of Ends, "is the Fortress of Ends, where the Icewarden resides. My friends left today to go serve him. So, who are you?"
The fae stared at her, and Kyokia thought she saw a few sparks in her eyes. "I'm Lapis. Don't mind the blood, it's a normal thing. I ran away because I didn't want to be the Stormcatcher's fighter."
Lapis wiped a tear from her eye and stood up, ferocious as ever.
"It's okay," Kyokia soothed, patting Lapis's head. "It'll be okay. Tell you what, let's start our own clan. One where we can be whoever we want to be. Okay, Lapis?"
Lapis nodded silently. "Okay," she whispered.
