There is an island in the Lightweaver’s sea where the trees grow wild and strong. They deter all but the determined, the desperate, who come singly or in small groups. Nobody ever brings an army: The rainforest does not take kindly to violent intrusions, and the witch less so.

Her name is Ianthe. Her lair, deep within the rainforest, never keeps the same location or appearance: a crumbling stone cottage, a tower half-melded with the trees, a rickety treehouse...

Still the supplicants come, seeking their heart’s desire.

“I want to hear again,” says the hatchling nestled in his Guardian’s claws. An accident cost him his hearing, and he is desperate for a cure.

“I want to be the greatest artist ever!” The Wildclaw tosses his flower-crowned head. He winks, but the witch remains silent, unmoved.

“I want to love again.” Passion rings true beneath the tawdry words, even as the Skydancer’s eyes fill with tears.

Ianthe listens to all the stories, the demands. She might do small tasks, lighting candles or chopping leaves into a bowl. Is this some sort of ritual? One cannot say. But once her supplicants fall silent, she tells them, “This is what you must do.”

~ ~ ~
The hatchling must go to a mountain peak and stand beneath a thunderstorm. He and his Guardian are Lightning-born, and will be safe from the strikes.

“Count every single thunderclap you hear.”

He screeches at these written words. “But I can’t hear! I already said—”

“Do it!”

The artist must go down to the beach. “Speak to the first child you see. Say nothing but good. Show nothing but smiles.”

“But...how is that...?!” The Wildclaw trails off upon seeing Ianthe’s scowl. He mumbles an apology instead.

And finally— “Fly up and touch the cloud hovering above the island.”

The Skydancer swallows hard. “Yes, ma’am.”

And off they go, skeptical and grumbling, to perform their tasks. Then, and only then, does Ianthe smile.

~ ~ ~
And what happened to these dragons? Let the legends speak—

The prince returned to his clan in triumph. He would never hear again, but he had learned to feel the thunder, to recognize all sounds thrumming through his bones...

The artist praised the child for their work and saw beauty in other dragons’ labors. He was soon called the greatest, for he could coax others’ talents into the light...

The Skydancer saw the world beneath her feet, and her heart leaped within her. She fell in love with the land and its wonders, and she traveled far and wide...

Their gratitude to Ianthe was boundless, for she’d given them their heart’s desire. Now...

Her lair is a grotto behind a waterfall, and she sits in the darkness. Waiting.

A dragon bursts through the water, wild-eyed yet resolute. Ianthe has seen that look before. She will see it again. And so the witch’s legend will endure....

“Very well, then.” Ianthe leans forward. “What is your heart’s desire?”
