A flurry of activity, a tangle of limbs and wings. What is it? they whisper and speculate and gossip, drawing closer and closer to the small, molten shape. An egg, I think? one finally guesses, wide-eyed with awe. A little one? they all wonder amongst themselves. Well, what else could it be? another chimes in. What could it mean? they argue and bicker for a few moments, and then the egg begins to stir. They all jump back, moony-eyed with shock. We have to take care of it! someone chirps, and the whole group devolves into a chorus of quiet agreement. We’ll raise you like one of their own, one of them promises, to the little magma-covered pebble.

And raise the child is exactly what they do.

Remo is an odd-looking child, but the free-spirited, flighty spirals who claim him as their own love him all the same. They teach him the ways of their beloved papa, and sing him ballads of their dearest Windsinger, tell them all the tales they know. He learns an appreciation for fine music, and a good nap beneath a grand old tree. He is content by every measure he knows.

Then he learns he is not alone.

Her name is Aurelia. Her beauty outshines the sun. And she loathes him from the very moment she lays eyes on him. She tries to educate him, telling him of the duties of their kind, the responsibilities that they bear. He counters that he is not her kind, that he is more wind than ice, that he prefers sun-soaked music to Gaoler claws. They argue endlessly, and then they begin to seek one another out to argue even further, and slowly - slowly - they reach what might be called an understanding.

(They fall in love. It sneaks up on them in ways Aurelia’s razor-sharp instincts could never anticipate. And then there is a third, who Remo sees the good in despite all the signs screaming out for him not to. They both love Vincent, in their own ways, even if some days he snaps at them and is bitter cold and does not act as if he loves them back. They know that he does. What more is there to it?)

Occasionally he is too gentle, too carefree, and his little ones act a bit spoiled, a bit too wild. Then, Remo can only watch helplessly as their mother nips their poor behavior in the bud, applying the discipline he never could. She claims that he should raise them better. He counters that she should be glad that he raises them at all. They quarrel, and squabble, and have their scrap, but at the end of the day, they still sleep side by side. He is soft where she is strict, she is lost where he is found.

And in the end, they are together. What else matters?
