PERSONALITY/LEADERSHIP

Leadership does not come easily to Tephra and it is a role he is still getting used to. Necessity and the loss of his last clan gave him the role, and it is an unconscious distrust that keeps him in it. Now that he has more or less adopted Enma and formed a new clan, he is obsessed with the idea of protecting what he has created and doesn't trust anyone else to do it properly, regardless of how he feels about them personally. He also isn't much in way of a charismatic leader, as much time alone has dulled his people skills.

As one gets closer to Tephra, he does warm up and can be quite tender in more private moments, but much of the clan sees him more as a strange, often awkward enigma who is perhaps too devout to the Flamecaller. It takes patience to become fond of the often gruff Tephra, though he does have a noticeable soft spot for hatchlings, who tend to like him fastest. Often, his gruff appearance and speech is a miscommunication. He may seem unfriendly but it's born of an awkward hesitance and plain not knowing how to talk to people. Despite that, he is protective, and though life has hardened him, he is loyal to his own and a bitter fighter who will do anything for those he loves.
TEPHRA
THE LEADER

Tephra, though born in the Sunbeam Ruins, had always felt the pull of the Flamecaller drawing him away from his home. He was convinced the gems adorning his skin were a gift from her, a promise that his life was not for the Light but for the Flames he saw reflected in them. His home among the broken pillars was not enough for him and so he followed the Flamecaller's pull as soon as his wings could support his weight. The journey to the Ashfall Waste was only as hard as his wings were young but he persevered through the Stormcatcher's domain until finally the heat of lava signaled his arrival. The sight alone was supposed to bring him purpose and fill the empty ache in his heart, but all he felt was alone. Tephra wandered through the Ashfall Wastes for a time and it was only when he began to doubt his choice that he stumbled upon the place he had yearned for: a clan of Guardians that towered over the young Ridgeback. Their leader, Ninmah, welcomed him into their midst and gave him a place to belong. Though small for his breed, the Guardians didn't stay so giant for long and he found himself happy within the clan, with a mate and a family to call his own.

That happiness was not to last, however. Emperors on a mindless crusade found his clan and made quick work of it. They were no match for even one of the towering beasts and in the frenzy of fire and desperation, Tephra was injured and separated from his family. He found his way back when he was able, but the morning light touched nothing but devastation. His mate and hatchlings were gone, his clanmates slaughtered. Ninmah, his great leader and friend was no longer there to guide him. He was truly alone. Aimless again, Tephra wandered until he could no longer see the remains of his old home and finally made the network of tunnels he had craved to build since he left his parents' nest. He built a stronghold that could have protected his clan, and resigned himself to a lifetime of loneliness within his protective tunnels.

As time passed, dragons came and went. His lair became a sort of rest stop for all sorts of dragons and creatures passing by. Few stayed, either because of the unforgiving terrain or Tephra's new unwelcoming attitude. He didn't mean to be gruff and unfriendly but as time passed he found he had a harder time talking to other dragons and took more to the company of the Smoke Gyre that would occasionally wander his tunnels. He became used to this new way of life and did enjoy the company of the few dragons that ignored his initial awkward welcome, but something still seemed to be missing. He took no other mate, had no other children, and even as the occasional dragon took refuge in his tunnels he found himself building no lasting connections. That is, until the arrival of Enma, who changed everything.

The moment he laid eyes on her he knew... or rather, he couldn't believe. She looked so much like her mother he thought himself a young dragon again, gazing up to his beautiful, benevolent leader. It was a spell but an imperfect one, given away by her very pink eyes and small stature. She was young, obviously hatched sometime after the destruction of his old clan, obviously hatched very far from the gyres of lava her mother had called home. But Ninmah was so obviously her mother, so obvious behind those wrong colored eyes, and he immediately knew her presence was no accident, immediately knew he would give anything for this young Guardian. Enma came to him and fit in his tunnels like she belong, chased the loneliness away with her mischievous pink eyes and infectious grin.

No longer alone, Enma acted as the bridge between him and his visitors. Her easygoing nature was enough to keep dragons in his lair and together they began to rebuild the clan he had lost so long ago. For the first time in a long time, Tephra had a family again.
