Windfall

He squinted around in the bright light. He wasn't sure where exactly he was, but it seemed... peaceful. More peaceful than... than what? He couldn't remember anything except a wild wind blowing him away from... somewhere... punishing raindrops like ice... and then... he squeezed his eyes shut, then opened them again when that failed to jog his memory. A tattered sheet of paper blew across the grass by his foot and he snatched it up without thinking.


Horror rose in him, learned by every Imperial in the nest. They were so careful, teaching each new generation the precautions and the tales of the terrors that resulted from carelessness. How could this have happened?

A voice from behind startled him, and he tried to spin around to look but he was still clumsy from waking up.
"What are you doing out here? It's dangerous, for anyone, but for you more than the rest of us!"
"What do you mean? For me?" he demanded. If this dragon knew him-
"Yes, didn't you look at that news you're holding?" The new dragon strode up to him and grabbed the paper, then shook her head, "That's old. Here, try this."
Another paper was shoved into his paw. He looked down at it and his eyes flew wide.


"She what?" He closed his eyes again. If he could only remember...
"Oh yes, it was this whole thing. All-" here the dragon hesitated, glancing at his face "- all but one of the deities spoke"
"Wha-"
"Oh for the... come with me. You can't be out here all alone like this."
"But... where do you live?"
"Well, you'll find out. Unless you want to stay here?"
