A soft dripping of rain was all that could be heard in the dark.

The patter of water hitting the shale above and trickling slowly along the stalactites was soothing, and watching it snake its way down the glowing crystals of the cavern in rivulets was even more so, thought the small coatl curled up in the darkest corner.

The cool gusts of wind only came every so often, but when they did, they were enough to cause full body chills and feather-fluffing, not to mention what they might do to the egg he was wrapped around.

It certainly wasn't his, for what coatl could even lay a nocturne egg, let alone at his age and without a mate? He didn’t even know who it belonged to in the first place, only that it had been left alone, and some primal instinct within him said “Care for it” the second he spotted its soft glowing.

He did later find out that nocturne eggs don’t usually glow, but that didn’t phase him at the moment. His only concern was keeping the hatchling to be warm and safe, and possibly giving its parents what-for if he could find them.

He doubted he would.

The thing is, he knew from experience that nocturnes usually kept their young and eggs well hidden, disguising them from the world and certainly making it nigh-impossible for clumsy, bright purple dragons like himself to find them. He was only a child, he wasn't even supposed to be alone himself!

The egg was, though.

Out in the open, in broad daylight.

Not normal, his lizard brain thought. Not normal.

It wasn't like he stole the egg, and frankly, he was just as confused as the next dragon when it came to why it was even in the Starfall isles, but he did take it, running into the shelter he had been using for the past few days and curling himself around it.

And that’s where he was now, stuck listening to the rain with an egg, one orphan taking care of another.
