Biography
oo3000000oo00000000000000000000000000000
They’d used to be the pair that burned the brightest, she and him. Phoenix remembered their time together fondly — how even in his shadow, he used to fill her vision, a sun glowing calmly against the dull horizon. It was difficult not to be enraptured in his presence: he was the flame that attracted all the proverbial moths. And he had kept her warm, gently glowing embers that soothed her soul from its core.
Pyre, he was called. He was built strong, unwavering, with muscle packed densely under scales that danced just like firelight. He was at once beautiful and terrifying, a stoic but merciful defender of their clan, who could render attackers to shreds and hold newly-hatched babies with the very same claws. He was both her friend and her lover, her trainer and her protector, her hope —
And also her despair.
She had watched him burn as he was consumed by the Shade. They outnumbered him twenty to one, mismatched eyes and unhinged jaws that locked on and tore him to pieces. His massive strength and flawless armour fell pathetically short in the face of the hellish shapes that entwined him. They tore his legs out from under him, scorned his sword, and ripped his wings to nothing.
Her clanmates had held her back as she watched him die. It hadn’t been even a minute, but that moment would last forever.
The lover and loved — living and dying — locked eyes one last time. So preoccupied were all the others at defending their ranks, or pulling her wings down so she couldn’t fly to his aid. So uncaring were all the others that she was the only one who saw his fire disappear.
They’d used to be the pair that burned the brightest, she and him.
It hadn’t mattered, because Pyre had been an imperial.
