Biography
A L U N
Eight Ruler - The Dream-Marked |
B I O G R A P H Y
He was the youngest son of Benjamin and Sophia - the Dragons who stabilised the legacy of the throne - and as such, the birth of him and his brother was seen as a blessing to the Clan itself. And Alun had plans. As the younger son, he was more than satisfied to work behind the scenes to help the Clan progress in any way he could. He drew up plans for an irrigation system to provide water for crops during the dry season, for improved infrastructure to boost trade, wrote letters almost every other day to neighbouring clans to strengthen alliances and soothe old grievances. It was becoming apparent to everyone, especially his brother, that he would bring the Clan to untold prosperity. His brother Wyn wasn't a bad ruler, per se, but in the light of Alun's ideas, Wyn's style looked downright old fashioned. Emboldened by his brother's popularity, and his own burgeoning romance with a notably... male diplomat, Wyn conceded the throne to Alun. For a short while, it all seemed perfect. Alun's alliances were airtight. Trade boomed. New crops could be introduced. But then he made eye contact with a beautiful young Dragon in a crowd one hot summer's day, and it all went south. His dreams that night were haunted by a chase. Whether he was chasing someone or being chased himself, he wasn't sure. What he did know, however, was that he awoke the next morning with a strange, fluid marking on his scales. The markings were an alarming shade of blood-red, and when healers attempted to revert the markings, they merely spread. Whispers soon spread like wildfire that the King was poisoned, and the hopeful atmosphere was shattered. Suspicions only grew when the Royal Guard started to comb the streets, looking for an Imperial dragon of blue and orange colouring, but to no avail. Alun's dreams were getting stranger as the marks grew. He saw glimpses of Her in between surreal visions of his ancestors and their deeds, mingled with what could only be himself, travelling along a road that he did not recognise. Alun grew more and more reclusive; retreating to his chambers earlier and earlier, avoiding the public as much as possible, and avoiding his bed even more so. It became unavoidable when he collapsed during a meeting with his delegates, and woke up from his fever dreams to see his brother at his bedside. Nothing needed to be said between them. They both knew why Wyn was there. That final night before he left, his dream was clearer than it had ever been. He almost thought he was awake; walking through the streets he'd worked so hard to build. But then he spotted Her. She was beautiful, but her features were drawn into a sad, sympathetic gaze. She bore the same pattern as he did, though a complimentary orange to her blue scales. "I'm so sorry," she said; her voice ringing clear. "I never meant for this to happen. Please believe that." The sunrise was blinding when he awoke that morning, and with a heavy heart, he left his superstitious clan behind him. |
