The Wildling Captain, Tai, discovered Hawkeye as a pitiful hatchling wandering and crying out in the wilds of the Viridian Labyrinth. Having very little familiarity with hatchlings himself, and being unwilling to abandon it to the inevitable fate that would befall it if it left alone, the Captain carried the creature to the Lead Researcher of the Empiricist faction, Corsicana, who had tutored the First Scion of the Matriarch and whom Tai expected would know what to do in this sort of situation. After inspecting the hatchling, Corsicana speculated that it was the hatchling's lack of a pearl, which he had most likely lost while venturing out of the nest, that had led to the newly-hatched Pearlcatcher's abandonment. The scientist kept the Pearlcatcher close at hand throughout his youth, interested in safeguarding him from the shame that the ignorant may have sought to instill in him; in so doing, Corsicana inadvertently began to fulfill the role of a father in the Pearlcatcher's life -- which neither of them minded in the least.

Hawkeye absorbed Corsicana's penchant for logic, but was also endowed with an equal amount of compassion, difficult traits to balance. His attention to detail earned him his nickname (which is his "true" name, for all intents and purposes, as what or even if his true parents named him is unknown) from the Lead Researcher, and he bears it with pride.
