Biography

Skulk

Deep in the Abiding Boneyard, Lantana, like so many others, was lost. Her limbs grew weak and shaky. She could barely hold onto her precious pearl and had to shift it from one forelimb to the other. The sun was painful on her delicate wing membranes. Vultures began to gather on the sun-bleached bones in her path but she was determined to not be remembered as carrion. I’m almost there, she told herself. I can’t turn back now.

She wasn’t almost there. The heat exhaustion, dehydration, and hypoglycemia that occurred during a two-week-long pilgrimage to the Wyrmwound had a way of distorting one’s sense of direction; Lantana hadn’t noticed that she passed the same twisted, dead tree at least a dozen times in the past three days alone. She was not even a quarter of the way there.

The vultures circled.

On the 13th day, only one day before her pilgrimage was supposed to be complete, Lantana collapsed. Every breath stung like a knife through her ribs. She tried to move but her muscles would not obey. Her limbs were as limp as a dead eel and she let out a breathy cry when her pearl rolled away from her reach. It was here, for sure, that the Boneyard would claim her. Her eyes fluttered shut as the vultures descended.

“Away! Leave!” A muffled voice awoke her. It was followed by bolts of pestilent magic that sent the vultures fleeing in all directions. Lantana struggled to open her eyes. She caught a faint glimpse of a serpentine figure she recognized as a Serthis. Too tired to fight, she raised a digit and pointed at her pearl. If she was going to die, she was going to die with dignity. The Serthis slithered over and retrieved the shimmering orb. It would fetch a fair price at the market, but the serpent had more empathy than greed and returned the pearl to its rightful owner. “Th… ank… y...” Lantana croaked, clutching her pearl as tight as she could muster. “Stekkan, this one’s in dire condition,” the Serthis said to her brother, a venomcaster who was keeping watch nearby. Stekkan put his sentry duty on pause to aid his sister in her effort to save yet another lost traveler. “We should take her to the pool,” he suggested. This caused great offense in Tanssi, a Serthis alchemist. “The pool?! Have you gone mad?! We can save her with alchemy and blood magic! The pool is a last resort!” “Look at her, Tan! The vultures have already begun eating her! She’s almost dead! Your alchemy won’t save her and neither will my blood magic. This is beyond our capabilities. If there’s any time to use the pool, it’s now.” Tanssi shot him a sharp glare. “Just help me put her on the sled, you bloodthirsty brute.” The two were silent and brooding the whole way to their lair. They stopped often to administer magic and potions to keep their patient alive. Carrioncorns, it turned out, were excellent draft animals. A team of six had no trouble pulling the weight of medium-sized dragons.

Lantana did not protest. She did not fight. She just held her pearl close.

The Serthis and their pestilent steeds reached the Rotrock Rim quicker than Lantana ever could, still avoiding all verbal contact. They worked quickly to bring Lantana back around. Pages and pages of alchemical formulae and blood magic rituals were scattered as the two did all they could. “She’s not going to make it,” Tanssi conceded in a solemn voice. “Bring her to the pool.” There was a quaver in her voice. Watching a patient die before you was heartbreaking. Watching a patient emerge from the Healing Pool was something that went beyond heartbreak; a sort of bittersweet tabula rasa. A creature coming out of the Healing Pool was never the same as the one that went in. But it was alive. It would feel no more pain, no more suffering. But to bring a soul back from the brink, a soul must be given in its stead.

Rummaging through the crates of magical items, Stekkan retrieved a bottle containing a smoky wisp that shimmered and danced. He brought this to the Healing Pool. Together, the siblings dragged the near-lifeless body of Lantana to the edge of the crater. It was filled with a sticky, slimy, pale gray substance. The Venomcaster began the ritual. “I offer the gods a soul and ask for this body to be born anew.” They waited, every moment tense with anticipation. Soon, the slime began to churn and took on a sickly reddish hue. This was their answer. Stekkan tossed the bottle into the pool and Tanssi shoved Lantana in.

It took a few minutes for the churning to settling down. Only when the fluid was completely still was the ritual complete. It returned to its original pale gray. A form emerged from the pool, the same creature that went in, but now covered in a web of ooze and bearing thick, slimy skin.

“What is your name, Reborn One?”

The dragon remembered nothing of her past life as Lantana. She looked down at Tanssi and answered her in a new voice. “Skulk.”

“I am Skulk.”

And so the rebirth was completed. Skulk would wander the Boneyard, impervious to its cruelty, and feast on the vultures that pecked at fallen travelers. The Serthis healers would follow her for a time, for she went where the vultures went, and where the vultures were, a patient was sure to be found.
