{ Mercenary | He/Him | Gay } Argus’ part in Clan Feldspar’s troubles began several eons beforehand, when the nightmare found him rotting in a stinking gutter along the Wind-Fire border. Having spent all of his considerable salary as a sellsword on food and drink, he had been left with nothing but his weapon and his wits—and, unfortunately for him, mercenaries are rarely the sharpest tools in the shed. By the time the nightmare stumbled upon him, he was eager for work, morality be damned. He leapt at the chance to wet his blade, and it was a very long time before he thought of looking back. Meeting Mergo ensured that he did. The nightmare’s plans were set into motion, and Argus was given the unenviable task of lying to one who could not be lied to. He wooed Mergo instead with sincerity, before spiriting him away to the north, where his dark master lay in wait to drain Feldspar’s secrets from the diviner’s honest tongue. Somewhere along the way, Argus came to admire Mergo’s loyalty to his people; he had never known true loyalty, and so Mergo’s bravery in the face of a cruel and agonizing death stirred a strange longing within his barren heart. With his master’s attention focused elsewhere, Argus returned to Feldspar territory, and met with Dreamweaver. He told them of the nightmare’s plans to capture them and ruin Feldspar, and Dreamweaver revealed that the nightmare was a piece of themself, which they had cast from their heart in order to live among dragonkind. Argus vowed to rescue both Mergo and Penumbra from the nightmare’s clutches, and, in league with Atsushi, kept his word. In the eons following the nightmare’s defeat, Argus and Mergo grew close. Argus could no longer deny that he felt more than mere camaraderie toward Mergo, and, despite what he had done, the two had settled into a comfortable relationship. Some might say their romance is a testament to the belief that love conquers all; if you ask Argus, he’ll tell you he’s just lucky to have fallen for someone so forgiving. Argus’ life before his stint under the nightmare’s banner is murky. To date, he has shared the full extent of it with no one but Mergo. He comes from farming roots, but took up mercing later in life due to circumstances he would rather not discuss.
