Her dreams are fraught with nightmares
Caught on the jagged edges of memories
She can't seem to find rest in her slumbers
Without remembering how she used to be

When she closes her eyes she sees them
Her old clanmates and family
And the dreamscape around her distorts
Into the homeland she remembers so clearly

Suddenly she's a child again
Wandering the hills of her family home
Her parents call out from behind her
Laughing and telling her to not roam

The shadow creatures are there as always
But she both attracts and keeps them at bay
She didn't know much about them
And didn't care as they stayed away

How foolish I was, on that day
Laughing without a care, walking away
No, please don't, please come back
You'll regret not stopping the attack

Her child self wanders over the hills
Laughing at the butterflies with a squeak and a squeal
When suddenly, suddenly, a shriek cuts through the air
And she turns around to see all light disappear

This is how it happens
This is when all went to waste
If only I went back to be with them
When with certain doom they were faced

She sees again how it happened
The ground pounding beneath her small feet
As she tears across the landscape
Just as shadelings and her clans meet

The battle was terrible
Her parents scooped her up to hide her away
No, don't, she cries, I want to stay here
I don't want to live without you in my day.

If I could go back to that time
I would have never left you alone
I would have never let you out of my sight
And let them destroy you, my home.

And the dragons around her fall one by one
As she watches with tear-filled eyes
Her scream dead in her throat
As everyone around her dies

This is the scene I remember
This is heartbreak I felt
This is the regret never buried
The rose of despair that'll never wilt

She staggers around in the open
Shaking the still and limp bodies
Get up, please get up,
Please, someone, speak to me

But nobody answers, and now she knows nobody will
The shadows creatures won't hurt her
But that didn't change how she felt
She saw the deaths of all those around her
And sees it again whenever she dreams
She'll always watch them die before her
As long as they remain in her memories

It's just a dream, she always tells herself,
But it's too real to not be true
All around her dragons are dying, gasping,
"This is because of you."
She always cries and tries to save them
But their blood is a tide pulling her down
And she must let go of all those she loved
Or under the weight of their grief she'll drown.

And the guilt of it all crushes her to the ground
Constricting her so she can't breathe
My fault, it's all my fault
She cries as she repeats and repeats

And just when she thinks she can't bear it
Just when she thinks her nightmares will win
She feels a warmth her around her
And radiating from deep within

You have a new home, a voice tells her
You have others who'll keep you safe
You don't need to fear those memories
You're now in a better place

Her dreams are fraught with nightmares

For now she has a new family
