Maren Scout
She came to Melody with a tale of neverending pain, of heat clustering and searing in her back legs. The potion that the healer gave her did not help. Melody was a great healer, and to Elssie's knowledge, her salves always worked. Something wasn't right.

She woke up to an intense darkness. Her legs were on fire. It had consumed her tail overnight. To walk, she would need her legs. She couldn't walk. She let it burn.

She couldn't breathe that morning.

The days passed in a haze of dry heat. Elssie could barely feel anything anymore. She was ready to give herself over to the void. She wanted to sleep. She wanted the pain to go away. It never did.

It was raining.

-

She barely registered the other dragon's movement. No one should have been up. It was silent. It was dark. This dragon blended in.
A tail wrapped around her body, and a slow drag began. They were... moving her. Where?
The pain seared upward. Elssie couldn't think.

The black dragon gently lowered her into the water. Cool. At first, the shock drove her to scramble for the shore, but then-
Cool.
It was cool.
No more heat.
She breathed deeply. It was the first free breath she'd ever had.

The days are free and open, the nights spent in the lake, and Elssie flourishes. The pain is gone forever. The others don't trust it, but Elssie knows herself now.

It is strange, growing scales at night, but this is real. This is right. Elssie swims with the maren in the dark world under midnight waters, and although she may not know why she does it, it is who she is.

She does not question.
