Friday, November 17th - A terrible accident in the tub. Sabina, the Blue Swedish duckling, breaks her leg right below the knee joint. None of the local vets are able to fix it. I am referred to an avian/exotic animal specialist two hours away in the state capitol, but they will not be able to do anything until Monday. It's going to be a long weekend.

Monday, November 20th - A long, stressful drive for everyone to the capitol. To fix Beanie's leg, the vet will need to put a pin in it; she will also be wearing an external apparatus to keep everything in place. Four weeks of this, then a second surgery to remove the apparatus. Goodbye, trip to Japan. My bird is more important and the cost means nothing to me. Beanie gets to spend the night at the vet clinic so they can anesthetize her, take better radiographs, run some blood tests, and monitor her pain.

Tuesday, November 21st - Surgery day. She was scheduled to go under at 10, and that seemed to be the plan, until a call from the vet changes everything. Sabina has been healing on her own! They put her under for surgery, palpated the leg a bit more, and determined that adding a pin might actually be detrimental, as she's doing a pretty good job keeping everything in alignment on her own. I get to take my bird home, and what's better is that she'll only need cage rest! No risky surgery necessary!
