9:17 am, 16th, Month of Rest, Year of the Spirit
I woke well-rested -- and alive, to see the light of day streaming in through the window. And yet, I can see a strange dragon, a massive imperial. When I left the room Eve gave me last night, I asked who the male was that was tending the gardens so early in the morning.
His name is Samael, and he is the Lord of the House. I've been told that he is a quiet fellow, and perhaps a touch somber - a far cry from Eve. I went down to join him, just as he was finishing tending the roses. He greeted me politely, and asked how I'd found my quarters, and seemed pleased when I told him I hadn't rested so well in ages. Then he took me on a tour of the grounds -- Eve told me she would do so when I was well-rested, but I suppose the task has fallen to Samael. He is an all-around pleasant fellow; every bit a gentledrake, with a pleasant demeanor. He carries himself well, and speaks eloquently. I suppose he must be a very well-read fellow, as he asked what brought me to the Hewn City, and when I told him I was a scholar and an archaeologist, he spoke with me at length about my studies, knowing things only a scholar would know of even the most obscure topics. We came upon a grotto I had not noticed the evening before, and he told me that he delighted in watching the birds, and often left seed for them to feed on in the garden. We sat and talked quietly for some time, all the while watching the birds flitting about the garden, picking idly at feeders I hadn't noticed for all the roses. Finally, a young dragon came to us, offering breakfast, and Samael told me to go meet the others who stayed there, and that he should like to watch the birds for a while longer. Finding I was indeed hungry, I bade him farewell, and went inside to join the others for breakfast, all the while wondering where Eve had gotten off to. |
