Tenebris

hanging-top-175x80.png

Tenebris eyes were glowing in the darkness like molten fire and steam rose from his hot body. He had covered his golden runes with dirt und mud yet there was nothing he could do about his eyes. The air was filled with the scent of moist earth and the sweet fragrance of flowers. But he could also smell the faint metallic odor of blood. His mates blood, he realized with a sharp pain of guilt. Theia was resting nearby, hoping he would either find some help or be strong enough to move on tomorrow. He could hardly suppress an angry rumbling growl thinking about how her Clan had hunted them like they were no more than ordinary game. Only when he had killed one of her brothers they had reluctantly retreated. Or maybe they had simply hoped she would die from her injuries anyways. But he wouldn’t let that happen, he would fight for her, protect her, save her. Unfortunately, this time the enemy couldn’t be fought with fire or claws. The deep gash in her belly had begun to fester. She was slowly dying from blood poisoning. That kind of enemy was beyond his skills. He tried to focus his attention on the valley before him again. He had to be sure this Clan was decent enough not to trade their lives for the bounty that his mate’s Clan had placed on their heads. So, he tried to observe them first, get an impression of the general atmosphere. But his time to decide whether to trust or move on was running out. It was running out fast. And he hadn’t dared to get any closer. Those Guardians protecting the boundaries were always alert and attentive. The last thing he wanted was being caught trespassing into another Clan’s territory. He sighed in desperation. What was he going to do? Suddenly, a high-pitched scream cut through the silence of the night. Tenebris turned around like a shot. That was Theia screaming in agony. Forfeiting all caution, he broke through the thicket, his massive body uprooting smaller trees as he rushed through the woods. Theia was on the clearing where he had left her. But she wasn’t alone any longer. There were two huge Ridgebacks holding her down to the ground. Her wound was bleeding heavily again, soaking the earth with blood. Tenebris roared with anger, his batting tail shattering the tree behind him. He could feel fire burning is his throat, hot and searing. “I would think carefully about my next move if I were you.” A menacing voice piped up beside him. A third Ridgeback stepped out of the trees onto the clearing. “You know, the bounty states clearly “dead or alive”, so if you don’t want her dead, you should think very carefully about your next steps indeed.” Tenebris sized up the three Dragons. They were well-fed, over-confident and cocky. “If you kill her, none of you will get out of here alive.” He hissed angrily. “Well, I’m sure you will do anything to ensure your mate’s well-being. I promise we won’t harm her if you surrender peacefully.” Tenebris laughed. “Do you really think I’d believe some dirty little cutthroats?” he spat. Before the Ridgeback could answer however, a huge male Guardian steeped out of the woods. No one had noticed him before. He walked past the Ridgeback, right to the middle of the clearing. Then he turned around. He looked from Tenebris to the Ridgeback, eyes narrowed in disdain. His voice was a low rumble. “I think we had enough of this. Do you really think we’d not notice some secretive fellow and some disgusting cutthroats sneaking around our borders?” Tenebris flattened his ears, but didn’t respond. The Guardian had said “we”, not “I”. His attention was focused on the Ridgeback, so Tenebris dared to sniff the air. Yes, there was someone else close by. Maybe more than one, he couldn’t be sure. The Ridgebacks seemed oblivious to that, obviously thinking the Guardian had confronted them alone. Sneering, the one standing next to Tenebris, who seemed to be their leader, approached the huge male. “And what are you going to do? Alone against the three of us? We will take our bounty with us. We have not violated your borders. You have no business here. Just let us take what is ours and we will be on our way.” The Guardian tensed. He looked to the bleeding Imperial female pinned down mercilessly by her two assailants, back to the sneering Ridgeback and then up to Tenebris. Tenebris locked eyes with the Guardian. “Please.” He whispered, pleading. “No business, you say. Well, you had your chance.” And without further ado, the Guardian shot towards the still sneering dragon, locking his massive jaws around his neck. It broke with a nasty crunching sound. Tenebris lunged forward, afraid what the other two would do to his mate. But before he had even taken one step towards, a pale coatl and a massive black mirror appeared beside the two. Red eyes gleaming beneath a white cape, the coatl slit the throat of the first Ridgeback, his soft smile quite disquieting. The body dropped to the ground with a soft thud. The black mirror had dragged the second one behind Theia’s massive body, but ripping noises and splattering blood indicated that he was taken care of, too. Tenebris didn’t care. He kneeled down beside his bleeding mate, who was looking up to him from eyes misted over with tears. Her wound was still bleeding heavily, and she had trouble speaking. Red bubbles appeared around her lips as she whispered his name. Tenebris nudged her gently, then turned to approaching the Guardian. “Help her, please.” He begged. “That one is a mess. You should have come for help sooner. I doubt she’ll make it.” The pale coatl said indifferently. “Yes, thank you, Morvyn. Why don’t you and Haru scout the area, make sure there are no other unwelcome individuals around. Depending on the price that has obviously been put on those two’s heads there might be more.” The pale coatl named Morvyn saluted mockingly, then disappeared into the night. Turning to the mirror now feasting on his enemy’s remains, the Guardian said: “Cain, please take Ennis and check the western border. And do you really have to do that? That is quite disgusting you know.” Cain looked up, still chewing. “Why let it go to waste?” he growled. But nonetheless, he turned around and walked away, too. “Now, to you.” the Guardian said finally turning to around to Tenebris, “As soon as I realized how badly wounded your mate was, I sent Oakheart to get our healer Falyse. They should be back any minute now. I don’t think we should move her now. I guess you had your reasons not revealing yourself to us, sneaking around our borders instead. But this was very foolish. What did you think you’d accomplish with your behavior?” Tenebris crumbled. “I…we…” he stuttered. “I didn’t know whom I could trust. We are far away from home, but not far enough I fear. And…I…” he stopped, not sure how to go on. How could he tell him that he had fallen in love with Theia as soon as he set her eyes on her. How her family had taken offense and objected to their union. The desperation they had felt. That he would not, could not, live without her and she felt the same. How they had run away, hunted down by her Clan who seemed to think that the punishment for disobedience should be death. And when they had payed in blood for their aggression, they had hired others to do their dirty work. Tenebris swallowed hard. The expression on the Guardians face had softened. “Son, there is much you need to learn. I can offer you shelter. At least for the time being. But you must know that the Sanctuary is no place of charity. You will have to earn your keep. And I won’t sugarcoat it, we do have some serious…activity going on. You will be expected to commit to our causes. But you won’t have to decide right now. I can see that you are too troubled.” The Guardian fell silent. Tenebris looked at Theia and she nodded slightly. A few moments later, a tiny Fae with shining red wings led two coatls onto the clearing. The white female hurried over to Theia immediately. “What were you thinking, Sigurd?” she snapped. “Letting this play out. How could you? You should have called for me immediately instead of stalking them.” The Guardian shrugged. “My focus was on the male. He was the one sneaking around. Then the three cutthroats appeared. There could have been more. We had to observe first. If it’s any consolation, her condition deteriorated fast when the two Ridgebacks attacked her. Before that, she was ok.” “OK?!” the female shouted angrily. “This one has been far from ok for quite some time. I will talk to Fahlyn about this. Caution is one thing, but since when have you become paranoid? Honestly Sigurd, you should have known better.” Tenebris looked from the stoic Guardian to the ranting coatl. She turned away from him eventually, focusing her attention on Theia. Murmuring under her breath, she examined the wound thoroughly, causing Theia to whimper in pain. “I’m sorry dear. But I have to see what I’m dealing with first. I’ll give you something for the pain, but I need you conscious now.” She said softly. Tenebris sunk down beneath Theia. He was feeling anxious and exhausted. But when the bleeding of Theia’s wound suddenly stopped, and new soft pale skin stretched over the deep cut in her belly, Tenebris felt hopeful for the first time in what seemed an eternity to him.
