Yig was bitten by a snake when he was young, it was his fault he poked places he shouldn't. The bite hurt but did something else to Yig. The snake was known for being poisonous and yet Yig was unharmed by it. Not understanding why it did nothing to him, Yig declared himself Lord of the Snakes, may all serpent bow before him.

It was pointed out that snakes can't really bow, I mean they possibly could make a similar motion but it's not really a bow, but those are details that Yig did not have time for.

Yig started to study snakes. He learned their body language, how they moved, everything they did. He could soon spout off snake facts like he was a walking encyclopedia of snakes. Eventually he picked one up and started to carry it, without it freaking out or caring. This began his snake collecting.

Yig cares for injured snakes and any snake he finds unique. No snake has bit him since the day he was young. Maybe he is some sort of Serpent Lord, or maybe he just really likes snakes and learned not to poke them when they didn't want to be poked. One of the two.
