Biography

The trees remember. They remember all who pass under their leaves on an afternoon stroll. They remember the children who climb them. They look back fondly on those who slip and skin their knees. They look back less fondly on teenagers who carve their initials into the bark. They remember the birds, the squirrels, the rope swings, all who have once called their branches and roots home. The trees remember.

Fletch looked about wildly in his surroundings, he had woken up in a mid-dream state with the woods encroaching around him. He had no idea how he got here in the first place, he thought he was home. Maybe he had slept and walked all the way out to the woods, it seemed to him like the trees were waiting with open arms to welcome him. It was an ominous feeling for him, it made him feel as though he were being surrounded and suffocated by the trees that gave him shelter. Fletch stared around for a while longer, astonishment filling through him, it was like he could hear the trees, whispering to one another. For a split second he thought they were mocking him and so of course he retaliated.
“HEY!” He shouted, the trees and plants fell silent. Fletch stared around him, pressing his talons into the dirt and trying to make sense of what was happening here. These clearly weren’t normal woods, no these were quite different indeed. It was an ominous feeling that he did not like at all, it sent a chill down his spine making him freeze up for a split second. Fletch slowly stood up and stared around him, thinking that maybe the trees weren’t talking after all but were instead a mere figment of his imagination. Yeah, that was it.
Imagination.

He began to make his way back when he realized there was no path to lead him home, there was no light shining through the leaves, or at least there was very little light. He felt his stomach do a nervous flip as he began to reluctantly make his way through the clusters of thickets. He ignored the feeling of suffocation as he could swear that the trees were hunching over as if trying to get a better look at him.
Where was he?

The trees began to whisper again, and Fletch began to walk through the woods faster than ever. He had to be close to home, he just had to. As soon as he felt he had made it out of the woods, something wrapped around his left leg and pulled him back. A loud scream issued from Fletch’s mouth. He felt the branches and thorns score his face and tried his best to protect his eyes from getting injured. Eventually he was no longer being pulled and looked to see a large tree stooped over him, it’s branch still holding him like a hand with thin, long, and rough fingers. Fletch felt his heart beating heavily, it felt like it was trying to tear a hole through his chest. The tree hung over him, and slowly unfurled it’s branches from around his leg. He stumbled backwards and all of the sudden, a vision as bright as the sun flashed through his mind. The woods were suffering, they brought him here for a purpose. He lived to serve them and was brought here for reasons he couldn’t quite fully understand yet.
The whispers of the trees sounded around him but no fear pulsed through him this time. He accepted where he was, and once more he was drawn back into his mid-dream state.
