history
It was a quiet night.

Qbal was hatched and barely got to see her parents before they took the Windsinger's Call and vanished, leaving her alone in a strange new world. In the nest beside her was her hatchmate, her sister. But she sneezed and ran off after their parents. Qbal tried to follow, but something held her back. There was no vine or rope there, but something else had wrapped itself around her legs, preventing her from moving. She cried out to her family, but they were quickly gone, and had not heard her. She stumbled back to the well-hidden bamboo nest and cried herself back to sleep.

In the morning, she woke, hoping that it had all just been a dream, and that her family would be there. They weren't. But things didn't feel as lonely as they did the night before. The sun was shining, and the breeze was fresh and happy. She popped out of the nest and tried to figure everything out, which was quite the task for the small guardian. She still couldn't figure out what had held her back the night before. There was only her, and the tall stalks of bamboo, waving and singing as they towered over her. Was it them? The bamboo?

"Hello?" she called out, hoping someone would answer. Something did. There was soft laughter that drifted through the air. Qbal followed it, weaving through the bamboo and quickly getting lost. The quiet laughter was always in front of her, drawing her further into the bamboo jungle. She stumbled into a small clearing and the laughter got louder before stopping suddenly. In the clearing was an ancient rock, covered in pale green moss. The rock, shaped like a pillar, bore strange markings that were almost completely weathered away. Qbal dragged her claw over one of the runes, tracing it. The rune glowed to life, and Qbal knew it meant grow. She drew the symbol in the air, but nothing happened. She tried again in the dirt, and a small sprout of bamboo appeared. Qbal laughed, and forgot about her lost family.

She spent the next days, weeks, months? tracing each symbol on the old stone, learning how to use each one. Some, like grow were easy to master, but others took much longer; she got frustrated quite often. But slowly she mastered each one.

Qbal was starting to feel the call of a charge, somewhere beyond the bamboo jungle that had become her home. But there was one rune left to learn - she couldn't give into the call yet. She forced herself to sit down, and traced the last rune, located on the very top of the stone. As she did, she felt that it was an easy rune, but only because she had mastered all the other runes first. The rune started to glow, and quickly engulfed her whole body, whispering true. When it was safe to open her eyes again, she felt smaller. Different. But most importantly, the pull of the charge wasn't there anymore. Instead, there was a smooth, opalescent orb sitting in front of her; a crystallisation of the magic she had learned. The last rune had changed her to what she should be.

With that, she headed away from the old stone, which was promptly lost to all knowledge again.
