The spine was soft leather, worn thin with age and with use. His claw dipped into the pages to open to a random passage, knowing there was no page bereft of heart and few spared of excitement.
“We were climbing through a thick sludge, around us was nothing but wasteland as we made our way through the contagion. Behind us was the ever-present wailing of an abomination too terrible to name. With the thick sickly ooze up to our shoulders I’m not sure how we made it out without catching it ourselves. Thank god Nereida was with me. But here I am writing this passage now in the warmth of camp. Well away from the fissure in the earth that contaminated too many good dragons. We need to gather our fighters and go back. We can’t let more dragons turn into those monstrous fungal beasts. I’ve contacted some earth dragons we are going to try to block the vein before it can spread to more lairs.” He flipped forward a few more pages, “I write to you with high airs. I met another traveler today, he said he would like to join us. I prodded him about his skills in survival and he said he is a force to be reckoned with! He said he too has an interest in uncovering the secrets of our world. We are travelling soon to the sunbeam ruins, hopefully there we can uncover more of what our world was like before our kind.” A soft smile graced his lips, eyes folding in a smile. The next passages were his favorite. He flipped through the pages, to one that had been creased so many times the corner came off. “Our trip across the waters was not as smooth as I had hoped it would be. The sunbeam ruins have never been so far away as they seemed yesterday. Something rose out of the water to greet our ship. I’d not ever read anything about such a creature as what I saw darkened and shifting under the ocean waves. It lashed terrible barbed limbs out at us and was faster under water then I am in air. We’d be dead if not for the newest of our crew. Arcane words spilled from his lips and the sky bent to his whim. In minutes it was water verses sky against our little vessel. Wind whipped up towering waves that tossed us with reckless abandon, I had to fight the wind with my wingspan just to keep from capsizing. Doumu, the dragon in the air, was summoning a torrential storm. Lighting crackled across his scales as he dealt bolts of electricity into the water at the beast. I think I fancy him. I’ve never seen a dragon more handsome then he with lightning reflecting in his eyes, mane salty and curled by the sea.” He felt the leather of a wing glide over his back and he looked up from the book. “Reading old stories my love?” “Just a few of my favorites.” Doumu replied, neck curling to greet her, rubbing his cheek against hers. “My force of nature.” “My force of life.” He replied, closing the book. It could be left to another day after all. |
