HISTORY
A few months after Nameless joined the clan, a band of travelers were led to the lair by Cieahte. The motley group came to ask if they would be allowed to rest near the safety of the clan for a few days and perhaps hunt the land. The members of Clan Cosaint filed out into their clearing to watch the band approach. The most curious member of the traveling group walked in last; a sleek purple and black Skydancer, adorned with pale lavender gems. Calvariam was the first to approach the strangers, laughing with the leader and reaching out to pluck at one of the gems upon Idris' chest. When the gem didn't come away in his touch and the full extent of the new dragon's health condition came apparent, Calv wisely chose that moment to get out of the way.
Cosaint fell upon the startled Skydancer, asking if he knew how to repair the damage wrought by Gembond and if he could shrink existing gems. A shaky assent finally worked itself free from his throat, and Cosaint immediately promised his group the lay of the land if he would help treat their ailing clanmate, Nameless. His group pushed him to agree, and shortly after his arrival Idris was introduced to the clan's healer, Creosote, before being brought to the tunnel where Nameless lay.
The first order of business was to cut away what gems they safely could before Idris could begin to treat and shrink the growth of gems. As they worked, the Skydancer told a bit of his history. He was one of three eggs hatched into a small band of Skydancers residing in The Southern Icefield. While still very young, the band of nomads traveled into the Starfall Isles and met a clan of Arcane residents who offered them a place to stay for as long as they wanted. In time, his family came to feel most comfortable where they were and elected to stay permanently. Idris received training in magical arts at a young age from his new clan's wiseman, focusing mainly on offensive Ice attacks so that he could help defend the clan against any violent wanderers from The Scarred Wasteland. Some latent magic from his hatching revealed itself in more than just his pale white eyes, however. Idris developed a passion bordering on obsession of knowing everything that he could and spent every spare moment he had researching the First and Second Ages.
The family's new clan had one oddity, however; every member bore Gembond. A few weeks after his family decided that they would stay, they were drawn into a meeting with the leaders. There the tale of the clan was laid bare. All the members bore the gems as proof that their magic was strong enough to curb death and that to do so was to honor the Arcanist. If they were to stay, the Skydancers were expected to submit to their practices as well. His parents immediately accepted the demands, giving their hatchlings no chance to say their opinions. They were led to the cage of a captive Onyx Cobra and told that the disease would likely begin to show itself within a few weeks. Until the Gembond was manifesting itself, however, they would receive as many bites as it took.
Idris and his family eventually began to display the disease. Years were spent by the clan's healers shaping the growths into pleasing patterns, with Idris' parents taking a special interest in the appearances of their offspring. It was his mother that chose to have his wings covered with gems, despite the fact that his flying would be severely impaired. He still attempted to learn how to fly, though one of his lessons ended with the young dragon crashing to earth. One of his wings broke during the fall, and after being admonished for potentially disrupting the production of his gems, the damage was healed as best as it could be. While he could still fly if absolutely necessary, the beating of his wings awoke waves of pain that he would rather not face. Grounding himself for the rest of his foreseeable life, Idris threw himself into his studies. He learned how to assist the healers controlling the disease and spent the beginning of his adulthood shaping the hatchlings born with small gem outbursts upon their bodies.
As the years turned to decades, problems began to arise within the clan. More and more members began to experience increasingly large eruptions of gems upon their bodies despite the healers' work. After one of their leaders was found dead from her Gembond, a veritable crisis erupted. No one could deny the truth of the matter anymore. As time passed, their healing magic would fail and the disease would progress unabated. It became clear that they had been lied to, that the Arcanist did not favor their clan. Hearing their death knells, many members chose to flee the clan in order to search for a cure on their own. His mother, one of the dragons experiencing a resurgence of their Gembond, chose to send her children out to help search for the cure. Unable to disregard her demands, Idris set out on foot to explore the foreign lands for a chance at life.
He forced himself to rise above his deeply rooted shyness in order to attach himself to nomadic groups so he would have a chance of surviving his ventures. As time passed, however, he slowly began giving up. There seemed to be no word of a cure, and after being separated from his home for so long he didn't know if there was anything left to return to. While his Gembond was still under control, how could he ever know how long he had left? Was this fruitless search worth whatever remained of his life?
Weeks went into taming the spread of disease in Nameless. After spending so much time in their presences casting his spells, Idris came to feel a connection to the ill Wildclaw and the grumpy healer who watched over their interactions so that she could learn the spell herself. Finally, once he was sure the Wildclaw would pull through, Idris pronounced him functionally healed though he would need to train to regain his lost strength. Nameless gave Idris a weak smile before bowing his head in a gesture of silent gratitude. A rare flicker of emotion crossed the mage's face. With a sad smile, he said "Do not thank me yet, friend. We've delayed time, not stopped it."
After a few months, Idris' traveling group decided that it was time for them to move on. As the rest of the band walked or flew away, he chose to stay behind. Cosaint readily gave her blessings, offering him as much peace as he needed so that he could take up his studies once more. To this day, Idris is hesitant to bond too closely with his clanmates for fear of leaving them sooner than he expects, however two of his lairmates have taken it upon themselves to see that the Skydancer cannot isolate himself completely. Corrai, through gentle chiding and laughter, and Creosote with her sharp tongue check in with him daily to be sure that the abstracted Skydancer doesn't allow himself to waste away in his pursuit of knowledge.
Every day for Idris begins the same way: upon awakening, he checks over his body for any new outbreaks and if any of his existing gems have grown. Only after performing his ritual and releasing a sigh of relief can Idris go and face the day. He knows that someday, something will have changed and all his fears will be made real. For the time he has left, however, he has a clan willing to allow him his eccentricities and passion for discovery. Though some painful mysteries, such as the fate of his family, will always haunt him the Skydancer is more than happy to give what he can for the clan that allowed him to settle down after so many years of searching for a myth.
