The only thing that could be heard in the once-vibrant jungle was the faint tapping and rattling of a dragon egg as it hatched. The hatchling poked its head out, its emerald eyes opening for the first time, taking in the view: A dark, misty forest, with the shadows of trees showing faintly. The forest was eerily silent. It was dead, and the hatchling was the only thing that lived.

First things first: eat. He turned and began gobbling down the shell he had lived in for the past few years. It was satisfying to see his prison disappear bite by bite, until only a crumb was left. He licked that up, too, and sat back, satisfied for now. Soon, he would have a pearl to take care of, but now, there was nothing to do but wait. All around him, the dead forest continued to exist. Mist curled lightly around the nest, like ghostly spiral dragons. Further on, the mist formed bulky shapes that could've been snappers or guardians. It made the hatchling feel lonely, and he began to wonder if he had parents.

Suddenly, the hatchling sat up. A shadow in the background had moved, and was now beckoning to him. Green eyes flashed briefly, like lightning, striking energy into the hatchling. He staggered forward, his swollen stomach bulging, and followed the figure. "My son!" A voice echoed through the empty woods around him. He ran faster, certain that any moment, he would crash into a warm body who would pick him up and care for him. "My son!" The voice died away and the hatchling stumbled to a stop, but not quickly enough. He hit the edge of a pillar, and sunlight practically blinded him.

This was how he found himself in the Sunbeam Ruins. It was there that he vomited up a tiny pearl, which he quickly began to take care of by spitting layer over layer of mucus memories onto it. He made a light living there - no pun intended. The crowds were noisy and bustling, and it was easy for a petite dragon like him to live in a large city, pickpocketing for a living, and generally avoiding too much social contact. His brief time in the dead forest made him crave the dark and the unknown.

At first, he was weak and helpless. Some motherly dragons took him home to try and raise him as their own, only to note an empty nest and an empty pantry the next day - the hatchling had let paranoia get the best of him and left. Others, sensing rivalry, tried to attack him. As years passed, he decided that dragons couldn't be trusted, especially in large groups, and he began to appear only during quiet hours.

His familiar came along somewhere along the line, latching onto him like a bee does to a flower. The familiar taught him how to fly properly, and also, thinking the hatchling was one of its own kind, how to criticize.

But Smokelight, as other pickpockets came to call him (the dragon who was attracted to the dark), couldn't live in the city forever. The authorities made one final attempt to apprehend him, and he was forced to leave the crowded cities with wounds all over. He ended up in the Tangled Wood, where he realized the dragons were much more like him: untrusting and untrustworthy.

It was there that he, convinced he was going to die undevoted to any deity, tried to rob one last time. Unfortunately, he collapsed as he attempted escape, and the dragons easily followed his bloody trail. Noting his weakened state, and how he still tried to push himself up and continue running, they brought him back to their Clan. The familiar, hysterical at first, was eventually calmed down.

Whenever something in the Clan goes missing, it's usually Smokelight's fault.
