Akara had never known a life of stillness, until she became bound to these walls. Her legs still twitched with the impulse to stray, though time quelled such an ache to a dull memory.

The view from the wall was an endless one. A stretch of land that seemed to clasp the horizon and puncture the very sun, letting its effulgent shine spill like ink upon the ground. Akara’s nails scraped the wall, feeling the rough texture of bone and marble dragging against the tip. She could not believe such a structure was a reality. But she stood, in subdued marvel even still, as the towering insentient giant creaked and stayed, seemingly impervious to downfall.

Or so Akara would have potential enemies and intruders believe. Her vigilance touched upon her duties, leaving her to cautiously check her set traps to a degree most would find insufferable. Her day moved as clockwork. From the caw of corvidae signalling the dawn she would be swift from the confines of her chambers, slithering as a spectre across the shadows of the looming walls. Her life of prior solitude left her little interest in morning pleasantries, though she found herself offering Aseila the ghost of a smile, and a nod of her head.

Sharp nails pried apart the mechanical traps. Akara fell into the silence of the morning, the fresh air of dawn stroking over her arms. Her hood tugged back and her cloak stroked by the playful gusts. Each click of the cog winding sent her thoughts ever deeper. She recalled a time in her travels where she would be laying these same traps for the wolves. Setting up camp in the painful chill of a winter night with little more than the eerie serenade of howls as she set her fire and kept herself wary. The cog gave a final click in her grip, and she released it. The trap stuck, poised to snap.

Each trap was reset if triggered, and maintained if yet to be touched. Akara often found that the odd rat would have managed to meet a grisly end, muttering under her breath as she cleaned the trap and turned the cogs once more. Traps that offered little in the ways of metal would utilise rope, instead. Each fray was shaved and tugged off, as Akara grunted, testing the hold of each rope by shoving her entire weight upon it.

Akara finished once the sun eagerly lapped at the very low reaches of grass. Too young to touch the wall, the morning air remained cold, though she could no longer feel the difference in herself. The shadows offered her a strange comfort. She was not one to bask in the light, drawing her hood back upon her head and stretching her wings, lifting herself off of the ground to scale the walls.

There, she stood. Gazing atop the wall as the wisps of wind moved through her, travelling leaves brushing by. She eyed the sun as if watching for its movement. But when it did not succumb as quickly as she would have liked, she found herself slinking back to her position.

Akara found herself to be a talented sentry. Years ago, she could have uttered a laugh at the absurdity of it. Feet that knew no land for too long, the thick taste of victory in battle for glory and gold. The roar of praise after a foe fallen, to the sigh of old merchants pulling carts across the limitless expanse of field and road. She supposed, if she squinted, she could see it. Protection. Though, she breathed a chuckle at the idea of needing to protect the gigantic fortress she stood atop.

And so she would remain faithful to her walls. The sun splayed its warm talons across the frigid marble, and Akara would skitter on patrol. Her wings still twitched with the ache to soar, legs too well known to a journey. Though others noticed the subtle hint of her movements, they could not doubt nor question her fealty to her duty. The stark contrast to her prior wandering was met with a surprising value to her sentry position.

By night, Akara shifted to glide across the walls, perched neatly upon the ledge to stare over the fortress. Gargoyle-esque and as still as the night waters, she barely motioned a blink as she surveyed the exterior. She was reluctant to admit her affinity for heights. The ability to see as far as the horizon gave her a thrill beyond any won tournament.

She let herself flutter back down, and for the second time, would leave her post at the wall. The sun gave its hesitant crawl back to the sky, the moon bringing about its eager darkness. The wind grew its chill, carrying the crisp remnants of burned wood, smothered in a strange sweetness that could only come at dusk. Akara took a few moments of silence to breathe it in, feeling the chill sting her nose. Memories of hot spring baths and aching limbs. It was a pain she missed. A tournament was not a war, and in the background of her thoughts, the worry nipped at her. She did not know how it would be, should war be declared. She held faith in the fortress, but a battle of hundreds would claim life, no matter how well a castle will stand.

Akara reset each trap triggered and maintained the ones left untouched. Cogs that clicked as her mind was left to escape down into the spiral of her solemn night time thoughts. Her solitary nature did not allow her such a topic of discussion. She was met with Aseila, and her seldom heard voice would utter mumbles of continued listening, nodding her head as she cleaned her nails from the oil of the mechanical traps.

Her day ran as clockwork. A hard thing to live when one was, before, without a concept of time itself. Akara crawled into her chambers with a soft huff and tugged off her hood, hanging it on the back of an old, wooden chair. She believed there was a time in which she would have snarled and spat on the idea of a schedule.

But now, the comfort of a plan offered her an underlying sigh of relief.
