is believed to be the night of a witches' meeting on the Brocken, the highest peak in the Harz Mountains, a range of wooded hills in central Germany between the rivers Weser and Elbe.[1] The first known written occurrence of the English translation "Walpurgis Night" is from the 19th century.[2] Local variants of Walpurgis Night are observed throughout Europe in the Netherlands, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Sweden, Lithuania, Latvia, Finland, and Estonia. In Denmark, the tradition with bonfires to fence off the witches going to the Brocken is observed as Saint John's Eve—essentially a midsummer celebration "with witches".

The smell of dried grass enters your nostrils, followed by the sharp scent of wood that is just catching fire. Fireflies dance in the distance and you hear the faint but pleasant chime of bells in the wind.

Entranced, you follow the fireflies to their mysterious destination, you are unable to look away, and the melody of the bells lures you along. You never once wonder if perhaps this is trap. It is far too beautiful to be deadly.

But suddenly the fireflies disappear and you are left in complete, utter darkness. No sound around you, you feel completely empty and alone, as if you exist in a vacuum.

A rustle of leaves from the left, a warm wind through your hair and a pair of dancing fireflies holds at bay the squeal of terror you were about to utter. At first the pair of fireflies seem comforting, dancing in front of you, flickering and holding your gaze, as if to say that everything will be alright.

Until they come closer and invite you to gaze into their ancient past. You see nothingness, longing, pain and betrayal. You now gaze into the empty face of a dragon that is no longer what they once were as the fire surrounds you and blocks your path to escape.

“I will free you.” the husk of the dragon says.

Your last attempt to cry for help is drowned out by the roaring flames that swallow you whole.
