I remember darkness. Enveloping blackness, neither liquid nor gas. And I remember light, gossamer thin, yet strong. I remember they raged across the cosmos, battling for control over what was here now, and what would soon come to be. Light and shadow, shadow and light.

Where they came together on the infinite battlefield that was the universe, they would tear each other apart. Shredding and ripping, each fighting to protect what could be theirs. Small parts of themselves, mere wisps of their own glory, would drift among scenes of past battles. Inky streaks of shadow, featherlike shafts of light. Sometimes they would dissipate into nothing, sometimes they would reunite with the primordial force from which they came. Sometimes they collide. Under these rare circumstances, a being is formed, something neither alive nor entirely unliving. Something akin to a demigod, a spirit given a corporeal form by two opposing forces melded together.

I was born of the primordial forces that balance our world. Where there is one, there must also be the other. I am light, and I am shadow. I embody both forces; the best of both worlds, and the worst of both worlds.

I watched as the light and shadow each coalesced into the Lightbringer and the Shadowbinder. I watched them continue their eternal struggle, and I watched as they each became a part of the great Pillar. I myself took attributes from both forces. I took the form of an Imperial, a child of light. I colored my wings the color of fog and my scales the color of midnight. And I bore the mark of a demigod, the mark of a being greater than the mortals with whom I shared this existence.
Upon this world, I was a god. Within my veins coursed primordial energy, an alloy of the two forces that most dominated this plane of reality. I held more power in my talons than any mortal dragon could possibly rival. With the gods of old lying dormant, I had the potential to overtake this world, and dethrone the deities.

Then the Pillar shattered. The gods were free, and I fled. I ascended Sornieth’s atmosphere, past where no dragon could survive, until my only surroundings were the stars, and the dark space between them. From my loft, I watched the Shadowbinder and the Lightweaver each make their departs. I had hoped they would resume their conflicts that had dominated the cosmos for so long. Perhaps they would have torn each other apart, finally putting their warfare to rest. Perhaps, with both forces gone, I could dominate Sornieth, and fashion it according to my own whims. Perhaps I could even become a god myself, shedding my dragon form to which I was bound.

But no, the gods of light and shadow each departed to their own land, and I myself returned to Sornieth once they were lulled and inattentive. I took up residence in the Sea of a Thousand Currents, among a clan of dragons.

I lie in wait. Someday, this planet will be mine, and none shall survive my rule.
