Caden has the ability to create and augment lightning storms. When a storm is present, he is able to call lightning to strike down enemies or other challenges. He is also able to direct it away from vulnerable spots. In the direst of circumstances, Caden can infuse himself with a lightning bolt to gain devastating power; however, doing so leaves him with burns across his entire body and usually causes him to collapse from exhaustion when the lightning's power is used up. Thus, he uses this particular power very rarely.
With his runes invoked, Caden's powers and his control are very much tied to his emotions: when he is angry and impulsive, the lightning tends to strike more randomly in an approximate range of his target. When he is strategically heading into battle or focused on a particular task, he possesses almost infallible control.

Before he invoked his runes, Caden's powers were not nearly so attuned to his emotions, and he was able to control them quite well. However, the lightning he summoned seemed rather weak, and he could not achieve the level of power he desired. As one of the Runecatchers' soldiers, he wanted to be able to best serve his clan in any way possible, and invoking his runes to allow him total access to his powers seemed the best way to do that.
As the process of invocation is rather unstable, and the nature of Caden's powers added to that instability, he decided to travel to The Lightning Farm in The Shifting Expanse, home of the Lightning flight. Lightning struck there a thousand times an hour, and yet a bolt never came near Caden, and the scientists there were fascinated by this Pearlcatcher with runes that were glowing so intensely they actually emitted an audible hum. After briefly explaining his intentions, the scientists agreed to help Caden, and guided him to the central, and most dangerous, part of the farm. There, he allowed them to hook cables all over his body, in case the lightning should turn against Caden and try to strike him down, then perhaps the farm would be able to draw away some of its deadly power.
Indeed, the moment Caden lifted his pearl and uttered his runes, the world became nothing but lightning. The Lightning Farm glowed like a blue sun, visible from all around Sornieth, creating panic in some communities as they thought the sun had exploded in the night. The gauges in the farm's control rooms shattered as the spires and the cables attached to Caden absorbed billions of gigawatts of electricity. The equipment began to buzz and hum and shake with a growing intensity and the scientists scrambled for the underground bunkers.

And then--

BOOM

Darkness.

The blackout spread from The Lightning Farm across The Shifting Expanse and then sped across all of Sornieth. (Cue more panics across the land.)
The Lightning Farm's scientists' ears rang as they crept out from the bunkers, peeking out through the control room windows just in time to witness an enormous bolt of lightning strike the pale shape slumped on the ground with a flash and another tremendous thunderclap that renewed the ringing in their ears. Cables and spires shone blue as the lightning bolt jumpstarted the systems and The Lightning Farm sprung back to life, and with it, the rest of Sornieth as power was restored to the grid.

As lightning gradually began to strike the farm's rods normally again, the scientists rushed out to find Caden unconscious and completely blackened with burns, except for his runes and pearl smoldering light gold and crackling with bright blue lightning. They immediately rushed him to the infirmary - the nurses were extremely experienced to treating lightning burns, but they'd never seen such extensive damage and marveled at how this Pearlcatcher was even still alive.
It's almost certain The Lightning Farm saved Caden. The facility's rods, spires, and cables directed away enough of the lightning during the invocation process, and kept the Runecatcher perhaps inches from death.
Caden stayed in The Shifting Expanse for a month while he recovered from his invocation, and practiced with his newly awakened powers, testing their limits. The scientists were more than happy to observe and record all sorts of tests for Caden. Even the Stormcatcher himself visited Caden multiple times, both in the infirmary and then out in the farm. The deity was incredibly intrigued by this foreign Pearlcatcher who summoned such lightning as to rival, even surpass, his own Tempest Spire.

Once the last of his burns had faded and he felt comfortable enough with his invoked powers, Caden departed The Shifting Expanse with the assurance that he would be welcomed back anytime, be it for pleasantries with the Stormcatcher or experiments at the farm. When he returned to Sunbeam Ruins, his fellow Runecatchers were amazed to see him alive. They told him what they witnessed of his invocation from afar, and thought it impossible for any dragon to survive such an ordeal.
The scientists of the Lightning flight did their job well, though, and after the first battle where Caden called a dozen lightning bolts to strike down a Beastclans squad threatening his clan, he was dubbed:

The Paladin of Lightning.
