With every move they had made, their body cracked. An eyeless skull swaying like crooked grass in the cold wind. Footsteps that did not touch the ground. A lifeless, rotten thing that breathed decay. Cold. Fearful, icy, smothering cold. Shattering, breaking, burning, they felt the ripping of time like a fracture as their gaze wavered and faded. Insects. The soft drop and the crackling of death as the grass shrivelled and the festering creatures fell curled and lifeless. Their mouth hung open, visions of villages filling their skull as the creature twisted and shuddered. | _____ |

Broken, broken. All broken. Left to the quiet. Towering towers crumbling, so miserable and so weak. The screams, rung in deaf ears that cared not to listen, could not listen. They felt the faux breath enter rotten lungs and spewed sickly air forth. A wandering plague. Contagion. Festering wounds as the sword bumped their ribs open and stayed lodged, faithful companion. They did not rest. Compulsion to continue walking despite the sun or moon. Rain that tinged pink, tinged brown with vile forgotten, slithering into bandages. They walked. Flew. Contorted pained and crunching body. Everything smothered in darkness, they felt no warmth from the sun, no chill from the night. As if pushed, they walked, forced by the nothingness. An existence that felt like scraping metal. The hollow chime of bells at a funeral, rain pouring. But it was empty. Bitterly empty. Gutted cottages left marred and broken, ripped apart and open mouthed with ripped off doors. Rippling flesh, rippling eyes as the crows cawed once, twice, three times, four. Breath wheezing as the creature stooped, crooked fingers plucking up a skull from the empty path. The grey sky crackled with light. No voices. No voices to be heard. The cawing. The eyeless beast had stilled to feel the skull. Hollow. There was no knowing. There was no ringing of familiarity, only the compulsion to collect and keep, numb to the rain starting to pour upon their wriggling, bludgeoned body. The village was death. Grass that did not grow. No strays, just bones. They moved about the abandoned in search, always in search, vision dazed and stained oozing with the nothingness. Back to the skull. Teeth chattering and the screaming, the crows cawed and they had squeezed too hard. Shattered. Shattered.

It was all in ruin. A headache. Migraine. The chisel upon the skull to pry it open. The skull dropped, the creature began to follow the path. Compulsion tugging like spiderwebs snatching prey to the waiting mouth. Pain. Pain rippling like broken water touched by invasive insects dipping into its once still love. Fish scattering, frightened, petrified, but the insects prod and invade. But yet they walked. Always walking. Body bending and bowing and broken but walking. The shriek of metal upon metal. Crows that perched and waited, the sun shone and the moon laughed at the beast, raging, manic laughter. Mocking. They were mocked. They were broken.
