The Grandidier’s Baobab is the largest of all baobab tree species. Native to Madagascar, it is threatened by agricultural encroachment, with around 1.000.000 mature individuals living in the wild.
The Grandidier's Baobab is can mostly be found in South West Madagascar, in dry deciduous forests, mostly near bodies of water.
They are mainly pollinated by nocturnal lemurs and fruit bats, and provide homes for countless native species.
Some threats include agriculture, fruit and seed harvests, browsing animals eating young trees, and bark extraction. The species also a slow rate of regeneration. However, being a recognisable species, the baobab has hope! It has featured in The Lion King as Rafiki's home, and is a signature of Madagascar and Africa. By spreading awareness, we can save every endangered and threatened species we put our minds to!
