G A E L The Fallen Knight Guilty • Unreasonable • Violent ╰━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╯
and it was all for her
»━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━« Once upon a time, before the usurper prince even began his scheming, Gael was a noble soul charged with protecting the daughter of the clan's former leader, the girl now known as Cyanotic. Like his mother, he was proud but gentle in nature, dutiful, and intelligent. As a child, he had been Cyanotic's playmate, so it seemed only right that he should later become her friend and protector after choosing the knighthood. Gael adored his charge as much as anyone, transcending his role as a bodyguard to take on the role of a brother figure. The two spent many happy days side by side, seeming to lead a fairytale existence, two carefree youths unconscious of the differences in their status and unaware of the disaster that was soon to shatter their lives. He had only looked away for a moment, or so he would say later in the brief spans of lucidity that came to him between fits of grief. A moment was all it took for Seivin to lead Cyanotic away from her bodyguard in order to take her down to the sea from their former territory in the Windswept Plateau. In the days that followed Cyanotic's disappearance, Gael was the first to point the finger at Seivin, but even Yahargul's spies failed to provide evidence for the accusation. Seeking to positively condemn Seivin and feeling that he'd failed as a knight, Gael resigned from the knighthood and was later initiated into Yahargul's spy ring. Weeks later, when Cyanotic's body was fished out of the ocean, Gael threw himself on the shore by her corpse and bellowed in grief, refusing to allow anyone near her until he was forcibly dragged away by Verigost's shieldmaidens. When Cyanotic stirred to life again-- or, to something vaguely resembling life-- Gael flew from savage screaming to uncontrollable weeping, first in gratitude that his charge was alive and then in sudden heartbreak upon the realization that she was no longer herself. As Cyanotic convalesced, Gael's sanity gradually frayed, eaten away by his guilt. By the time Cyanotic recovered enough to return to whatever passed for normal life among the clan, he was no longer a noble knight, but a hollow madman who knew only that he must protect her. The madness he had fallen into had it's benefits: Gael rose quickly among Yahargul's spies, becoming renowned for his ruthless and single-minded nature. He would have become Yahargul's immediate understudy, but he cared only for looking after Cyanotic and wouldn't spare the time to learn the finer points of being a spymaster. Still, his education in subterfuge served him well, as he was later involved in Seivin's coup against Hemwick. Loyalty to the king or even to his own mother meant very little to him when his only loyalty lay with Cyanotic. Gael is the only remaining son of the fugitive princess, Verigost, but to this day he serves Prince Seivin in the interest of remaining at his charge's side. His life is inexorably tangled with hers. To the present day, Gael remains mad, violent, and ever-vigilant; ruined and remade by his tragedy and the boundless love of a brother for his sister. ╭━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╮
